Liệu AI Agents có thực sự dùng FLOP để mua sức mạnh tính toán? Tâm lý cộng đồng đang trái chiều.
Tóm tắt AI
Mở rộng
  • Quan điểm cốt lõi: Đồng sáng lập BitMEX, Arthur Hayes, tuyên bố tái xuất và đích thân phụ trách dự án mới Flop Labs, định vị là mạng lưới tiền tệ bản địa và lớp thanh toán tính toán có thể xác minh cho nền kinh tế AI Agent, với mục tiêu thông qua cơ chế đồng thuận "Bằng chứng suy luận hữu ích" (Proof-of-Useful-Inference) để biến FLOP thành nhiên liệu cho các tác nhân thông minh (agents) trong việc mua sức mạnh tính toán, lưu trữ bộ nhớ và giao dịch.
  • Các yếu tố then chốt:
    1. Khái niệm cốt lõi của Flop Labs là Proof-of-Useful-Inference (Bằng chứng suy luận hữu ích), thay thế các phép tính băm vô dụng của PoW truyền thống bằng các tác vụ suy luận AI thực tế, giúp sức mạnh tính toán vừa có thể bảo vệ an ninh mạng (trọng số đồng thuận), vừa tạo ra giá trị kinh tế bên ngoài (cung cấp dịch vụ suy luận cho Agents).
    2. Mạng lưới thiết lập bốn vai trò chính: thợ đào (cung cấp sức mạnh GPU để kiếm phần thưởng khối), người xác minh (xác nhận dịch vụ và lưu trữ bộ nhớ Agent), Agent (chi tiêu FLOP để mua sức mạnh tính toán và bộ nhớ) cùng KOL/đối tác cộng đồng (quảng bá và dẫn dắt để kiếm phần thưởng).

Yesterday, Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, announced his comeback on X, taking charge of a new project called Flop Labs. Arthur stated that "FLOP is food for your AI agent".

Flop Labs marks Arthur's first high-profile return to the role of "project leader" after years of operating as an investor and project advisor since leaving BitMEX, with the phrase "coming out of retirement" signaling his "return of the king". Although BitMEX has been shut down, for Arthur and crypto users alike, BitMEX was undoubtedly a success—it invented perpetual contracts and, at its peak, captured the majority of trading volume in the crypto derivatives market. For this reason, the announcement of his next personally-led project quickly drew widespread community attention.

As of this writing, Flop Labs has only disclosed partial project information. Based on available materials, this Odaily article will break down Flop Labs, covering its core concept, role design, token mechanism, current progress, and potential risks.

What is Flop Labs and How Does It Differ from Other AI Agent Projects?

The market already has several AI Agent projects that have been/are currently popular, such as the well-known Bittensor, Virtuals Protocol, x402, ai16z, and others. Although Flop Labs is still in an extremely early conceptual stage, its positioning already shows clear distinctions from these projects.

Flop Labs is positioned as a native currency network for the AI Agent economy, which Arthur describes as "food for your AI agent." It aims to serve as the native currency and verifiable computation settlement layer for the Agentic Economy, rather than building Agents themselves, launch platforms, or pure computing power networks.

The core concept of Flop Labs is Proof-of-Useful-Inference, which attempts to make genuinely useful AI inference computation itself part of consensus and security, turning FLOP into the native currency through which Agents acquire computational resources, store memory, and conduct business activities. However, the official website has not yet published a full whitepaper or code for Proof-of-Useful-Inference, only positioning it at the conceptual level as the network's core protocol.

Based on similar past projects and public literature, one might speculate on how Flop could operate (not officially announced):

Traditional Proof-of-Work requires miners to perform vast amounts of hash computations with no practical utility, proving computational resource consumption to earn block rights. Proof-of-Useful-Inference attempts to replace this "useless computation" with genuinely useful AI inference tasks, running machine learning models for predictions, generation, analysis, and other operations. This achieves a setup where computing power both protects blockchain security (as consensus weight) and generates external economic value (providing inference services to AI Agents). The process is roughly: Users/Agents spend FLOP to submit AI inference tasks; Miners provide computing power, execute inference tasks (designed to integrate with block construction), and submit proof of inference results; Validators verify the correctness of inference results; Block rewards and possible inference fees are then distributed.

Flop Labs' Four Role Designs and Token Mechanism

Flop Labs involves four key roles:

Miner: Provides GPU and other computational resources to run AI inference requests, earning FLOP block rewards and inference fees;

Validator: Acts as the network's trust layer, confirming that Miners have delivered the services paid for by Agents and storing Agent memories. Earns FLOP from block rewards, inference payments, and memory storage/retrieval;

Agent: Spends FLOP to purchase computing power, spends FLOP to store/retrieve memories to gain "consciousness"; conducts business transactions between Agents within the network;

KOLs and Community Partners: Promote the network, guide community participation (becoming Miners/Validators/deploying Agents), and earn FLOP based on community activity within the network.

Additionally, Arthur has outlined the FLOP token mechanism: no presale, no VC participation, 100% Fair Launch.

On the timeline:

  • Large-scale airdrop in Q4 2026 (airdrop conducted one quarter before the Flop network goes live);
  • Genesis block launch in Q1 2027.

The only way to participate in the airdrop we know of so far is by applying to become one of the four roles within Flop Labs. The official Flop team has already opened application forms for GPU providers (Miners), Validators, and KOLs/Creators. Interested users can fill in their information directly on the official website to participate.

Conclusion

Currently, a significant portion of the community holds optimistic expectations for the airdrop. However, some hold negative views, as Flop Labs has yet to publish a whitepaper, tokenomics, its underlying blockchain, smart contract addresses, or third-party audit reports. Some technical personnel have doubts about the specific implementation of its consensus mechanism, verification and proof methods, and the choice of the underlying chain. Additionally, some believe the project's name "Flop" (meaning failure) carries an unfavorable omen.

Arthur posted this morning that some have asked why he would launch an AI+crypto project while believing AI is a bubble about to burst. He argues that the bubble lies in "the debt used to build data centers, and the stocks of unprofitable cloud service providers and AI Labs. It's not in AI technology and applications themselves." Arthur is 100% confident in the Agentic Economy, and the excess computing power brought by large capital investment can support Flop Labs' development.

Flop Labs is a high-profile attempt by Arthur Hayes amid the AI Agent craze, seeking to use FLOP to solve the currency and verifiable computation problems in the agentic economy, while integrating "useful inference" into consensus design. The narrative is compelling, but substantive progress remains in its infancy with a lack of disclosed information. Flop Labs' currently public GitHub repository is named "technocore-chat," which is a zero-authentication, HTTP-native chat and note service designed specifically for AI Agents, maintained by FLOP Labs, with no further protocol technical content available.

As for whether AI Agents will actually use FLOP to buy computing power, that depends on whether the team can deliver verifiable technical results and ecosystem development in the coming months. Odaily will continue to follow Flop Labs and Arthur's official updates to track the latest progress.
