The name "30 under 30" is a bit of a misnomer—it's more like 30 individuals or teams under 30, spread across 20 fields, and there are actually more than 600 winners in the end. Nonetheless, blockchain and cryptocurrency entrepreneurs excel in areas such as finance and venture capital.

The 10 winners in the field of cryptocurrency are basically no different from the celebrities in the circle we know. They are:

Soona Amhaz (Volt Capital), Sam Bankman-Fried (FTX), Joey Krug (Augur), Alexander Liegl (Layer1 Technologies), Jack Mallers (Zap Solutions), Flori Marquez (BlockFi), Charlie Noyes (Paradigm), Brian Tubergen ( CoinList), Amiti Uttarwar (Bitcoin Core developer), and Athanasios Karachotzitis, Jeong Woo Park, and Andrew Yang (Authenticiti).

While many on the list said being nominated was irrelevant and that it was a team effort, they didn't really think much of it...we asked the four honorees how they felt about the nomination though:

BlockFi co-founder Flori Marquez

"It's an endorsement," she said, "and an advocacy of our product."

Marquez, 29, co-founded BlockFi in 2017, but the company only really entered the crypto space last year, when it began offering crypto users interest rates on bitcoin and ethereum deposits — all while DeFi is truly before takeoff.

As soon as Marquez heard she was on the list, she called her mother, Cecilia, a Spanish teacher in Boston. "It's the most 'mom' move ever," says Marquez. "She congratulated me, but I could see she kind of wanted to hang up. Then I thought she thought she hung up, but she didn't, and I heard her say to the class: 'Boys, my daughter won an award. Already!'"

"feels good!"

Augur co-founder Joey Krug

Joey Krug, 25, said he had no idea he was selected. Unlike his competitors, he didn't submit an application -- Forbes reporter Michael Del Castillo sneaked his name in after he wrote a profile for Krug in July. Krug only found out he had been elected while checking Twitter.

"Such a thing" refers to many things. Krug founded Augur, a prediction market platform built on top of the Ethereum blockchain. A truly global market could be created on anything people might want to bet on — and reduce the high fees that make it fun.

But he's also the Chief Investment Officer of Pantera Capital and has served as an advisor, investor or developer in several other projects.

"In the big picture, it's not that important. It's great to be part of it, but it doesn't mean I'm going to try to use the title for personal gain or anything like that."

Krug's goal at this stage is to "at least make a difference" in finance and healthcare, two industries he believes are broken.

Coinlist co-founder Brian Tubergen

Brian Tubergen, the 29-year-old founder of crypto platform CoinList, was named to the list in his final year.

Now it's his turn, and he says he feels "a little bit of a celebrity".

"Of course my friends outside of the tech world seem to think it's one of the most amazing things in the world."

"I'm sure no one will remember tomorrow," said Tubergen, who will return to the cause that earned him today's award. As chief product officer of CoinList, a platform for raising money for crypto companies, he might be helping to groom 30 of the next generation of entrepreneurs under the age of 30. "We have to keep working hard," he said.

In his view, the award "is a distraction from what matters most, which is to continue building the company and delivering value to customers."
