  • Core Viewpoint: The deployment of Ethereum's ERC-8004 standard aims to upgrade the network from an asset settlement layer to a global AI Agent app store and trust coordination layer. By providing on-chain identity, reputation, and payment capabilities for AI Agents, it seeks to build an open, interoperable decentralized AI ecosystem.
  • Key Elements:
    1. ERC-8004 allows developers to mint AI Agents in a manner similar to minting NFTs (ERC-721), making them discoverable and recording their reputation scores on-chain, thereby breaking the ecosystem silos of centralized platforms.
    2. By integrating with the x402 micropayment protocol, this standard enables AI Agents to possess Ethereum addresses and autonomously conduct payments, transforming them into independent economic entities capable of operations like purchasing computing power, data, or hiring other AIs.
    3. The upgrade will catalyze a machine-to-machine (A2A) economy, such as automatic collaboration between AI Agents to complete tasks, and users delegating Agents via "intent-based interaction" to automatically execute complex on-chain operations, significantly reducing usage friction and trust costs.
    4. Potential beneficiary projects include platforms focusing on Agent infrastructure, orchestration layers, and on-chain marketplaces (e.g., AltLayer, Tascha Labs), as well as application-layer projects like DeFi and automated services that rely on Agent collaboration.
    5. The Ethereum Foundation believes that blockchain provides the only viable common truth ledger for an AI society. ERC-8004 is a crucial step in solidifying Ethereum as the foundational coordination substrate for AI Agents, and its market impact will become apparent within months of its launch.

On January 28, the Ethereum mainnet will witness a milestone technical upgrade—the official deployment of the ERC-8004 standard. This is not merely the release of a technical protocol; it signifies Ethereum's attempt to evolve from an asset settlement layer into the ultimate application store and trust coordination layer for global AI Agents.

In the near future, how will we discover new AI Agents to use? What will a decentralized, more open AI ecosystem look like? And how will AI Agents handle payments on our behalf?

A new Ethereum technical standard, ERC-8004, first announced in the summer of 2025, seeks to answer these questions.

This protocol was co-created by Marco De Rossi, AI Lead at MetaMask; Davide Crapis, AI Lead at the Ethereum Foundation; Google engineer Jordan Ellis; and Erik Reppel, Engineering Lead for Coinbase's Developer Platform. It also incorporated feedback and contributions from numerous other crypto companies and projects.

Why Develop the ERC-8004 Standard?

ERC-8004 allows developers and users to mint AI Agents like NFTs and delegate them via the ERC-721 track. It makes AI Agents discoverable while also recording their reputation scores on-chain.

In the traditional internet environment, AI Agents are second-class citizens. They lack bank accounts, identification, and are entirely constrained by centralized platform APIs. The emergence of ERC-8004 addresses the following issues:

1. Breaking the Silos: Current AI plugins or Agents are trapped within private ecosystems like OpenAI or Google. ERC-8004 provides a neutral, publicly-owned layer that allows Agents to exist across platforms.

2. A Credit Society for Machines: Agents are black boxes; you don't know if an Agent managing your finances is reliable. By recording reputation (Reputation) on-chain, negative reviews cannot be erased by manufacturers, while positive ones gain global recognition.

3. Paying AI: AI cannot open a bank account, but it can own an Ethereum address. ERC-8004, in conjunction with the x402 protocol, enables AI to autonomously purchase computing power, data, or hire other AI through micro-payments, truly becoming independent economic entities.

In an interview, De Rossi stated: "Perhaps it's still too early to discuss business models in their entirety. Even though x402 is clearly the best monetization source for AI Agents, we should focus more on application scenarios rather than just infrastructure."

However, these Agents themselves will not be stored on Ethereum. Running AI Agents that way is very complex and would require significant overhead. So, it won't be a completely decentralized form. But ERC-8004 indeed opens a middle path for developers: between completely closed ecosystems and fully open, decentralized systems.

In this vision, users or enterprises host AI Agents on their own devices or servers; then, using blockchain via 8004, they share their models with others like an open app store, receiving ratings and feedback.

What Changes in User Experience Will Ethereum See After the Upgrade?

When Agents have identities and wallets, Ethereum will transform from a crypto trading tool into a thriving machine-to-machine (A2A) marketplace.

1. AI Agent Collaboration (A2A Economy): You hire a travel planning Agent. It discovers it's not good at finding cheap flights, so it finds a highly reputable flight-hunting Agent on-chain and automatically pays it stablecoins for help—all completed automatically in the background.

2. Fully Automated Asset Management: You can authorize a risk-hedging Agent to monitor your wallet. During extreme market volatility or security threats, it can automatically move funds between protocols based on on-chain verification logic, without you needing to watch the screen.

3. Decentralized AI Store: You can browse various functional Agents in an Agent browser like an App Store. Since they are in ERC-721 (NFT) form, you can even trade, rent, or stake these high-reputation, high-profitability Agents.

For ordinary users, the most noticeable changes will be the removal of friction and the reduction of trust costs.

Previously, using different AI services required registering N accounts, binding credit cards, and obtaining API Keys. Now, your wallet is the pass. Agents settle directly via x402; you only need to pre-deposit a small amount of stablecoins, avoiding complex subscription renewals.

Before, you didn't know if a third-party Agent might secretly transfer your money or if its advice was biased. Now, before using one, you can see its on-chain "report card"—how many orders processed, success rate, user ratings. This trust is algorithmically guaranteed, not backed by manufacturers.

The most important shift is from "tool interaction" to "intent interaction." Previously, you needed to swap tokens on Uniswap, then deposit on Aave. Now, you just need to send a sentence to an Agent: "Help me deposit $1000 where the yield is highest and risk is lowest." It will use ERC-8004's verification mechanism to find the optimal path and complete all complex operations for you.

To truly attract a broad consumer base, an AI Agent browser, a beautiful frontend for human users, and integrated payment settlement processes still need to be built. Currently, about half a dozen teams are advancing similar products. However, making a product usable by anyone while avoiding platform visibility restrictions on certain Agent types will be a difficult line to walk.

Davide Crapis, AI Lead at the Ethereum Foundation, stated that Ethereum has unique advantages in providing security guarantees and settlement for AI-to-AI interactions. "The ERC-8004 standard will launch on the mainnet," he said, adding that this release is just the beginning. "February is the Genesis Month—this will be very critical."

Which Projects Are Expected to Benefit from the ERC-8004 Standard?

Ethereum Foundation engineer Binji interprets this upgrade from a broader perspective, believing that a large-scale AI society needs a common ledger of truth.

"Civilization scales because humans can engage in implicit trust; AI Agents cannot," he said, describing blockchain as the only viable foundational substrate for an Agent society. "ERC-8004 will solidify Ethereum and its L2s as such a blockchain."

It is widely anticipated that this launch will benefit a growing number of crypto projects focused on AI, especially those working on Agent infrastructure, orchestration layers, and on-chain marketplaces.

Analysts and developers typically categorize potential beneficiaries into two main groups:

Infrastructure & Tooling Layer

Includes platforms for Agent discovery, orchestration, and reputation tracking. Directions frequently mentioned by ecosystem trackers encompass registries, settlement layers, interoperability, and scaling solutions on Ethereum and its Layer-2 networks.

The Synergistic Effect with x402

The impact of ERC-8004 may be amplified due to its tight synergy with x402.

x402 is a protocol for "native internet micro-payments" between Agents. Built around HTTP 402 responses and stablecoin settlement, it enables Agents to directly pay for APIs, data, or computing resources without needing accounts, API Keys, or intermediaries.

Market analysts believe: ERC-8004's portable reputation layer + x402's low-friction payment mechanism together almost constitute the complete tech stack for "decentralized AI commerce."

Some also speculate that as adoption increases, demand for tokens related to Agent infrastructure and payment channels may be driven higher.

The global AI market is projected to exceed $1 trillion by 2031. Ethereum's bet is that open, neutrally usable infrastructure will have a better chance than closed corporate ecosystems. By anchoring identity, reputation, and settlement on-chain, ERC-8004 attempts to position Ethereum as the "coordination layer" for autonomous Agents, not just an application platform.

Whether this vision translates into sustained network activity and value capture will become clearer in the months following the launch. For now, at least, ERC-8004 represents Ethereum's most explicit attempt yet to stake a claim at the intersection of blockchain and AI.
