On the evening of January 4, the 178th Ethereum Core Developer Executive Meeting (ACDE #178) was held online. This meeting made decisions on the proposed testnet Dencun upgrade schedule proposed at ACDE #177 on December 21. The final confirmation was made, and priority discussions were held on the subsequent Pectra upgrade plan.
Odaily Note: The Dencun upgrade is actually the collective name for the two upgrades Deneb and Cancun. The former focuses on the consensus layer, and the latter focuses on the execution layer. Cancun translates to the Cancun that the Ethereum and Layer 2 communities have long awaited. In the same way, the Pectra upgrade is actually the collective name for the two upgrades, Prague and Electra.
The host of ACDE #178 this time is not the familiar core developer Tim Beiko (who will return to host ACDE #179), but is hosted by Geth team developer lightclient. According to the meeting held by lightclient this morning Minutes, last night the developers reached a consensus on the testnet schedule for the Dencun upgrade.
The developers unanimously agreed that the activation time of Dencun upgrade on the Goerli test network will be determined as January 17. In addition, the developers also tentatively agreed to set January 30 and February 7 as the Sepolia test network and Holesky test respectively. The date of network upgrade.
Regarding this time schedule, although most developers think it is slightly radical, it is generally acceptable. However, developer potuz1 clearly questioned it, believing that the upgrade interval (13 days) of the Goerli test network and the Sepolia test network is too short, or Not enough to observe possible problems.
In order to quickly respond to possible problems after the upgrade of the Goerli test network, the developers have decided to hold ACDE #179 on January 18. If problems do occur in the Goerli test network within the first 24 hours after the upgrade, the developers will have Opportunity to review the follow-up schedule.
It is worth mentioning that,The timetable for the mainnet upgrade was not mentioned in the lightclient meeting minutes, but in ACDE #177 the developers had discussed deploying the upgrade to the mainnet as early as the end of February. Considering that ACDE #178 did not postpone the testnet The timing of the upgrade, ideally we can still maintain that timing expectation.
In addition to the content related to the Dencun upgrade that is currently the most concerned in the market, developers also discussed the priority of subsequent Pectra upgrades.
Regarding the Pectra upgrade, developers conflicts mainly focus on whether to focus on verkle before upgrading, or to improve verkle while promoting smaller feature upgrades first. Most developers believe that verkle should be given priority, but the developers of the Reth client believe that a small feature upgrade should be promoted first.
lightclient also mentioned that verkle is at least a one-year work, and if you choose to focus on verkle, there will be no new execution layer (EL) functionality for at least the next 12-24 months. For this upgrade, developers will conduct more discussions and demonstrations in the next ACDE meetings.
All in all, the greatest significance of this ACDE #178 is to finally finalize the testnet schedule for the Dencun upgrade. On January 17, let us witness the new stage of the Ethereum ecosystem starting from Goerli.
