Adobe delivered a quarterly earnings report with strong fundamentals.

In FY2026 Q3, Adobe's revenue reached $6.76 billion, up 13% year-over-year, exceeding the market expectation of $6.69 billion; adjusted EPS was $6.13, also beating the market expectation of $6.08. Customer group subscription revenue reached $6.56 billion, accounting for approximately 97% of the company's total revenue, indicating that Adobe's core subscription model remains highly resilient.

However, after the earnings release, Adobe's stock price fell by about 2.5% in after-hours trading. What the market is worried about is not the quarter that just ended, but the slightly conservative revenue guidance for the next quarter: Adobe expects Q4 revenue of $6.8 billion to $6.85 billion, with a midpoint of $6.825 billion, slightly below the market expectation of $6.85 billion; the adjusted EPS guidance midpoint of $6.33 is basically in line with expectations.

Compared with this slight guidance discrepancy, what is more noteworthy this quarter is that Adobe's AI strategy is moving from product deployment into the user conversion stage. Adobe announced that AI-first ARR grew more than 150% year-over-year, and the total monthly active users of its creative and productivity products surpassed 1 billion. The question is no longer whether users are willing to use Adobe's AI features, but how much of this usage can ultimately be converted into new subscriptions, generative credit consumption, and enterprise contracts.

Data in a Minute

• FY2026 Q3 revenue of $6.76 billion, up 13% year-over-year, exceeding the market expectation of $6.69 billion;

• Adjusted EPS of $6.13, above the market expectation of $6.08;

• Business professionals and consumer subscription revenue of $1.91 billion, up 16% year-over-year, above the prior guidance midpoint of $1.88 billion;

• Creative and marketing professionals subscription revenue of $4.65 billion, up 13% year-over-year, above the prior guidance midpoint of $4.625 billion;

• Acrobat and Express monthly active users exceeded 900 million, up more than 25% year-over-year; Acrobat AI Assistant monthly active users doubled quarter-over-quarter;

• Free monthly active users of creative products surpassed 100 million, up more than 70% year-over-year; Firefly ARR grew 40% quarter-over-quarter at period-end;

• Q3 operating cash flow reached a record $2.52 billion, and the company repurchased about 9.5 million shares;

• FY2026 full-year revenue guidance midpoint raised to $26.601 billion, above the market expectation of about $26.51 billion;

• FY2026 full-year adjusted EPS guidance midpoint of $24.48, above the market expectation of about $24.36.

To understand Adobe's earnings report, one cannot just look at whether revenue and EPS beat expectations, but also at whether AI is expanding Adobe's market or weakening the entry barriers of traditional creative software.

Based on the current data, Adobe's core business has not shown obvious signs of AI substitution. Customer group subscription revenue grew 14% year-over-year, business professionals and consumer business grew 16%, and creative and marketing professionals business grew 13%. Actual revenue across all three segments also exceeded the company's prior guidance midpoints. This means that amid the rapid spread of generative AI, Adobe can still increase subscription revenue rather than relying only on price cuts and promotions to retain users.

Adobe's greatest advantage is its complete professional workflow. Standalone AI models can generate images, videos, or text, but enterprise customers also need editing, copyright management, brand consistency, cross-team collaboration, and large-scale content distribution. Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Acrobat, Firefly, and GenStudio together form a work chain from generation and editing to publishing, and this product combination is harder to replace than a single generative model.

At the same time, Adobe is expanding free user entry points. Free monthly active users of creative products have surpassed 100 million, and Acrobat and Express monthly active users exceed 900 million. The free strategy can lower the threshold for users to enter the Adobe ecosystem and help the company compete against a large number of low-cost or free AI creation tools.

But monthly active users themselves do not equal revenue.

Adobe needs to prove that new users will gradually develop usage habits, consume more generative credits, and ultimately upgrade to paid subscriptions. AI-first ARR growing more than 150% year-over-year is a positive signal, but the company did not disclose the absolute amount of this ARR in this quarter's earnings report. Disclosing only the growth rate without the scale makes it temporarily impossible for the market to accurately judge the actual contribution of AI revenue to total ARR of $27.5 billion.

This is also why the slightly lower-than-expected Q4 revenue guidance triggered a stock price decline. Investors have already seen rapid user growth, and what they want to see next is revenue accelerating in tandem. If AI monthly active users and usage continue to grow substantially while Adobe's overall revenue still maintains low double-digit growth, the market may question the paid conversion efficiency of free traffic.

The business professionals and consumer segment growing 16%, currently faster than the 13% growth of the creative and marketing professionals segment, is also worth noting. Acrobat, Express, and AI Assistant are expanding Adobe's service scope from professional designers to students, small and medium-sized businesses, knowledge workers, and ordinary consumers. Compared with the already relatively mature Creative Cloud, this part of the market has a larger user base and broader use cases, and has the opportunity to become the next stage's source of incremental growth.

However, expansion into the mass market may also lower revenue per user. The willingness to pay of free users, mobile users, and light-tool users is usually lower than that of professional designers, so Adobe needs to strike a balance among user scale, conversion rate, and average revenue per user. In the future, it will not be enough to observe only MAU; it will also be necessary to track paid user numbers, generative credit consumption, Firefly ARR, renewal rates, and average revenue per user.

Management transition is another variable. Anil Chakravarthy will take over as CEO on December 1, 2026, while Shantanu Narayen transitions to executive chairman. Chakravarthy previously oversaw the customer experience orchestration business and global sales, and has extensive experience in enterprise customers, AI marketing, and commercialization. This appointment means that Adobe's next-stage focus may not just be launching more AI features, but converting these features into measurable subscription and enterprise revenue.

From a financial perspective, Adobe still has ample room for transformation. Q3 operating cash flow reached $2.52 billion, adjusted operating profit was about $2.97 billion, and the company also repurchased about 9.5 million shares. Unlike AI infrastructure companies that need to invest huge capital to build data centers, Adobe mainly bears model R&D, inference, and product development costs, and does not need to exchange large-scale balance sheet expansion for revenue growth.

What is worth watching next is whether Firefly ARR can continue to grow rapidly, the conversion rate from free users to paid subscriptions, generative credit consumption, enterprise customer adoption of GenStudio and AI agents, and whether the Creative & Marketing Professionals business can reaccelerate.

User scale has already emerged, and product entry points have already been established. What Adobe needs to prove to the market in the next stage is that these 1 billion monthly active users will not only use AI, but are also willing to keep paying for AI.
