Optimism announced the details of its next iterative upgrade Bedrock (meaning bedrock in Chinese), and described it as the cheapest, fastest, and most advanced Rollup architecture, dedicated to achieving a greater goal-Ethereum equivalence, Instead of the previous EVM equivalence.
Optimism first introduced the concept of EVM equivalence in October last year, that is, it is completely consistent with the specification of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), rather than just being satisfied with EVM compatibility, and launched the first EVM equivalent chain a month later , as a massive upgrade to the Optimism network.

Simplify every piece of code, making Optimism the most accessible, forkable and auditable Rollup code base;
Modularize every part of the stack so that alternative data availability and execution layers can be easily plugged in;
Optimized to minimize cost and reduce complexity.
Optimism says,After Bedrock, EVM equivalence no longer applies. Optimism aims for Ethereum equivalence by using all of Ethereum's code, infrastructure, and design patterns.Bedrock will introduce a series of powerful new features and optimizations, including:
Theoretically optimal call (calldata) data submission, providing users with the cheapest transaction of any Rollup (ever);

A micro client diff that opens up the possibility of alternative client implementations and provides an additional level of security for Optimism users;

Highly optimized deposits and withdrawals, allowing users to easily transfer assets into and out of Optimism;
Smarter synchronization, ordering, and state commits to ensure Optimism survives all Ethereum network conditions.
At the same time, Bedrock is also the foundation of Cannon, Optimism's next-generation fault proof system. Cannon was first built by George Hotz and is the first interactive public fault proof that can run EVM equivalent Layer 2, on which EVM contracts without changes can be run , theoretically can also achieve the lowest calldata Gas cost, which will also make Optimism take into account simplicity and security. Bedrock has been merged into the main Optimism single repository.
Optimism claims that an Alpha version of Cannon will be launched at the same time as Bedrock is released later. Bedrock is not just an upgrade, it's a whole new paradigm on how to build Rollups. Bedrock was designed from the ground up to provide the foundation for true security and decentralization. Bedrock (in combination with Cannon) is the only Rollup architecture that can easily support multiple failure proofs and client implementations.
With Bedrock, Optimism is aiming to be the first EVM-based Rollup to achieve Ethereum-level security guarantees.
