Consensys inadvertently granted access to a developer linked to North Korea for one month

2026-07-17 19:41

Odaily Planet Daily reported that blockchain company Consensys earlier this year brought in a software developer under the pseudonym Tyler Knapp through a third-party service provider. Subsequent investigations revealed his connection to North Korea. The developer participated as a consultant and had access to some of Consensys’ systems for about a month. Matt Corva, Consensys’ General Counsel, stated that Tyler Knapp was never an employee of the company. After discovering the threat, the company terminated his access rights and launched a comprehensive investigation, confirming that no assets or data had been misappropriated, no malicious code had been deployed, and user security had not been compromised. Following the incident, Consensys temporarily paused product releases and conducted an investigation. Matt Corva added that the company will reassess its outsourcing practices for engineering and development work.
