DOJ seeks to forfeit $5 million in Bitcoin stolen in SIM hacking case

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a civil forfeiture lawsuit for over $5 million worth of Bitcoin (BTC). U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced that the funds were allegedly the proceeds of multiple SIM swap attacks targeting victims across the United States. The indictment alleges that the funds were traced to the thefts and unauthorized transfers of cryptocurrency from the cryptocurrency wallets of five victims, with the thefts occurring between October 29, 2022, and March 21, 2023.
