MSX US Stock Daily Observation: Intel 2026 Q2 Earnings: AI Reignites CPU Demand, Data Center Surges 59%
- Core Thesis: Intel's quarterly revenue recorded its fastest growth rate in over a decade. Non-GAAP returned to profitability, with the Data Center and AI business serving as the core growth driver. The GAAP net loss stemmed from non-cash accounting items, but persistent foundry losses and high capital expenditure indicate the transformation is not yet complete.
- Key Factors:
- Revenue of $16.128 billion, up +25% YoY, surpassing expectations and marking the fastest growth since Q3 2011; Adjusted EPS of $0.42, also beat estimates.
- GAAP net loss of $11.033 billion, almost entirely due to a non-cash revaluation of "escrow shares"; excluding this, actual profitability was achieved, and GAAP operating income turned positive.
- Data Center and AI revenue surged +59% YoY, the highlight of the quarter. Management stated that server CPU demand is "exceeding supply" and signed 10 long-term contracts this quarter.
- Foundry business continued its loss of $2.089 billion. Capital expenditure remained high, and adjusted free cash flow turned negative (-$8.419 billion). Investment is expected to increase further next year.
- Q3 revenue guidance midpoint of $16.3 billion and adjusted EPS of $0.38 both exceeded expectations, indicating the transformation direction is on track.

Today's Observation
Intel reported its fastest revenue growth in nearly a decade this quarter, and the market broadly views this as a signal that the company's transformation is beginning to yield results. The financial statements show a sizable GAAP net loss, but this did not stem from a deterioration in core operations; rather, it was due to a non-cash accounting item: shares entrusted to the U.S. government under the CHIPS and Science Act. As the company's stock price rose significantly, the corresponding book liability expanded and was recorded in current-period earnings, creating a paper loss. In other words, the stronger the stock price, the larger this book loss. Excluding this factor, the company was actually profitable, and operating profit has turned from loss to profit.
More notable this quarter was the clear recovery in the Data Center and AI business. Management stated that demand for server CPUs has exceeded supply, and the company signed multiple long-term supply agreements during the quarter. This indicates that the current wave of AI is not only boosting GPUs but also reigniting demand for traditional CPUs—Intel's home turf. Meanwhile, the company's guidance for the next quarter also exceeded market expectations.
However, the other side of the transformation remains unchanged: the foundry business continues to post losses, capital expenditure remains high, free cash flow is negative, and management expects further increases in investment next year. Overall, the direction of improvement is established, but whether the foundry can achieve breakeven and when cash burn will subside remain key factors to monitor going forward.
Data in a Minute
- Revenue: $16.128 billion, +25% YoY, beating the $14.431 billion estimate; the fastest growth rate since Q3 2011
- Adjusted EPS: $0.42, beating the $0.21 estimate; GAAP net loss of $11.033 billion, almost entirely from a $12.529 billion non-cash revaluation of "entrusted shares"
- Data Center and AI revenue surged +59% YoY, the quarter's biggest highlight; management stated server CPU demand has "exceeded supply," signing 10 long-term supply contracts in the quarter
- Client Computing: $8.877 billion, +13% YoY; Foundry: $5.765 billion, +31% YoY
- Q3 Guidance: Revenue midpoint of $16.3 billion, adjusted EPS of $0.38; both significantly above expectations
- Foundry operations still posted a loss of $2.089 billion; capital expenditure remains high, adjusted free cash flow turned negative (-$8.419 billion); management expects 2027 capital expenditure to be higher than 2026
MSX View
The real story of this earnings report lies beyond the GAAP loss. It is a non-cash accounting byproduct: the higher the stock price, the larger the book loss on entrusted shares. It has no bearing on revenue from advertising, cloud, or CPUs. What reflects the health of core operations—sustainable and comparable—is the return to Non-GAAP profitability, the positive GAAP operating profit, and the growth rate in the Data Center and AI business. Management's statement that server CPU demand has "exceeded supply" and the signing of 10 long-term contracts in one quarter indicate that this wave of AI is not only driving GPUs but also reigniting CPU demand—Intel's stronghold. On the flip side, the foundry business still lost $2.089 billion in a single quarter, adjusted free cash flow was -$8.4 billion, and capital expenditure is set to rise in 2027. This shows that the heavy investment for transformation is far from reaching the payoff stage. The story is improving, but the foundry's breakeven point and cash burn are the two most critical signals to watch next. In the short term, be cautious of a "buy the rumor, sell the news" pullback.
