EU Expands Crypto Sanctions Against Russia, Adds Trading Bans on 14 Platforms and Allows Comprehensive Bans on Related Countries

2026-08-18 04:38
Odaily News: On July 23, the EU adopted its 21st sanctions package against Russia, expanding trading bans to 14 crypto service platforms located in Georgia, Panama, the UAE, the Marshall Islands, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus, and adding four new measures targeting the A7 Russian ruble network.

The new rules, effective August 25, prohibit Russian and Belarusian citizens from holding, controlling or holding positions in MiCA crypto asset service providers within the EU, with the scope extended to services such as advisory, portfolio management and transferring crypto assets on behalf of clients.

The new rules also allow the EU to impose comprehensive crypto trading bans on third countries that fail to prevent related sanction evasion. The list of relevant countries is currently empty and includes only third countries that the EU Council determines to have persistently and systematically failed to prevent the provision of crypto asset services or the operation of related platforms.
