Reading the Code of the “Bitcoin Standard”: The Coins of Machines and the Soul of Builders
- Core Thesis: As AI agents become the core productive force of the digital economy, stablecoins serve merely as efficient transaction mediums. Digital civilization requires a Native Standard of value that aligns with its native mode of production. As a candidate for this role, Bitcoin's true paradigm shift is its leap from a payment and settlement asset to a reserve currency and measure of value for long-term valuation in the digital economy—not a replacement for fiat currency.
- Key Elements:
- Five stages of digital economy evolution: from tool civilization to standard civilization, where Agents possess autonomous decision-making and economic participation capabilities, giving rise to new demands for value measurement.
- Stablecoins, anchored to sovereign state finances and centralized access, cannot serve as the ultimate standard of value. Bitcoin, through cryptography and distributed game theory, becomes the most worthy reserve currency candidate for validation.
- The ideal monetary structure is a dual-layer system: Stablecoins serve the transaction layer (high-frequency API payments), while Bitcoin serves the reserve layer (long-term wealth storage and capital foundation).
- m&W proposes a three-layer architecture: Builder (the direction layer, determining why value exists), Coordination Stack (the collaboration layer, determining who captures value), and Bitcoin (the reserve layer, determining what value flows).
- Distributed order, through a strict distinction between Identity, SBT, Attestation, Reputation, Coordination, and Distribution, enables trusted credit and automated profit distribution in human-machine collaboration.
- Core principle: "Money belongs to machines; the direction of value belongs to humans"—humans provide aesthetic and strategic intuition, while machines execute efficiency and settlement.
Prologue: A Challenge Every New Civilization Must Confront
During the peak of the industrial civilization, humanity sealed productivity within factories, contracts, and the ledgers of centralized banks. The alternation between the gold standard and fiat currency based on credit was, in essence, a measure of value designed by humanity for the collaboration of "Human Entities."
However, as human society accelerates into the deeper waters of Human ↔ Digital Twin ↔ Agent ↔ Organization, a paradigm disconnect regarding modes of production and monetary standards is unfolding.
Phase 1: Tool Civilization (AI as Tool) ───> Humans use software Phase 2: Intelligence Civilization (AI as Force) ───> AI replaces execution Phase 3: Agentic Civilization (AI Engine) ───> Agents possess autonomous decision-making and economic participation Phase 4: Collaborative Civilization (Coordination) ───> Cross-agent network organizations of Human ↔ Agent Phase 5: Native Standard Civilization (Native Standard)──> The digital economy seeks an endogenous measure of value
As software agents (Agents) that operate endlessly, lack physical form, and require no KYC verification become the core productive forces of the digital economy, the dollar system and centralized stablecoins have swiftly provided highly efficient solutions.
It must be acknowledged that stablecoins are likely among the most efficient transactional media in the digital economy. However, a transactional medium does not equate to an ultimate native standard of value. Stablecoins can resolve high-frequency API billing and machine settlements, yet the fact remains that they are still anchored to the fiscal expansion cycles of sovereign states and the admission permissions of centralized institutions.
This is not an attack on stablecoins or a rejection of the old system, but rather an articulation of a more fundamental civilizational challenge:
Does a borderless, machine-speed, highly autonomous digital economy, besides needing a medium for daily transactions, also require a Native Standard that matches its native mode of production?
Chapter One: A Civilizational Hypothesis
We do not worship any single technological totem, nor do we fall into narrow Bitcoin Maximalism. We ground our perspective in serious financial history:
Why did industrial civilization choose gold and the dollar? Because they were best suited to the physical trade and nation-state sovereignty systems of that era.
So, when humans and AI jointly enter the digital civilization, what constitutes the most suitable benchmark of value for that mode of production?
We place Bitcoin / Sats at the core of our observation, not because it represents absolute truth, but because it is currently the most worthy candidate for a Native Standard in humanity's history of cryptography and distributed game theory.
DIGITAL ECONOMY │ ┌─────────┴─────────┐ │ │ Transaction Layer Reserve Layer │ │ Stablecoin Bitcoin │ │ High-Frequency Long-Term Value API Payments Store of Wealth Agent Commerce Capital Base
In the most natural monetary structure of the digital civilization, stablecoins function as Transaction Money, providing liquidity, while Bitcoin serves as Reserve Money, forming the capital foundation.
Bitcoin's success does not need to be achieved by "replacing fiat currency" or "overturning the dollar." The true Bitcoin standard is not when machines start using BTC, but when the digital civilization begins to measure value in BTC.
As the surplus and newly created wealth of the global digital economy increasingly and naturally adopt BTC as the ultimate reserve and capital benchmark, the leap from a "payment asset" to a "measure of value" will have already occurred.
Chapter Two: Three-Layer Architecture and Value Deconstruction
If money merely solves the transfer and storage of value, the machine world could easily devolve into a chaotic computational jungle and Darwinian algorithmic competition.
When machines possess computational efficiency and payment tools, how should the unique order of human civilization be anchored? m&W proposes a three-layer structure of "Direction - Coordination - Value":
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ m&W Three-Layer Architecture & Value Triad │ ├─────────────────────────────┬───────────────────────────────┤ │ 1. Direction Layer │ Builder │ │ • Determines "why value exists"│ • Aesthetics, values, genesis intuition, strategic judgment │ ├─────────────────────────────┼───────────────────────────────┤ │ 2. Coordination Layer │ m&W Coordination Stack │ │ • Determines "who should receive this value"│ • Identity, credentials, authorization, contribution & distribution order │ ├─────────────────────────────┼───────────────────────────────┤ │ 3. Reserve & Value Layer │ Bitcoin / Sats │ │ • Determines "what value flows"│ • Base-layer computation, permissionless settlement, measure of value │ └─────────────────────────────┴───────────────────────────────┘
Bitcoin tells us what value is flowing, m&W tells us who should receive that value, and the Builder determines why that value exists.
This is not an empty literary rhetoric, but is achieved through a symbiotic mapping of extremely rigorous distributed protocols and human intuition:
1. Builders provide source creativity: Human aesthetics, ethical boundaries, and strategic intuition determine the system's evolutionary goals;
2. The m&W Coordination Stack builds contractual order: It grants Digital Twins and Agents corresponding authorization levels and resource allocation rights based on verifiable collaborative relationships and historical contributions;
3. Bitcoin / Sats provides the underlying value benchmark: It completes global asset settlement and long-term reserves on a physically secure, counterparty-risk-free ledger.
Money belongs to the machines, but the direction of value belongs to humanity.
Chapter Three: The Formation of Distributed Order
In m&W's evolutionary path, the ascension of the technology stack represents a formal move from a mere tool community (1.0 Consensus) and a division-of-labor network (2.0 Cooperation) towards distributed order infrastructure for the digital civilization (3.0 Order).
To ensure the rigor of this order, m&W strictly differentiates the cryptographic relationships between identity, credentials, and actions, refusing to conflate credit into a single ambiguous concept:
Identity (Who I am) │ ▼ SBT / Credential (Long-term identity/role) │ ▼ Attestation (What I have done) │ ▼ Reputation (How the network evaluates me) │ ▼ Coordination (What I can participate in) │ ▼ Distribution (What I should receive)
- Identity & SBT: Defines the long-term non-transferable attributes and contractual identity of Builders and their Digital Twins;
- Attestation Layer: Strictly adheres to the
Subject + Action + Context + Proof + Attesterstructure, precisely recording verifiable actions performed by a specific subject in a specific time and space (e.g., submitting code, providing computing power, or completing inference tasks); - Reputation & Coordination: Trustworthy credit emerges dynamically from accumulated Attestations, which then automates Agent-to-Agent business negotiations, authorized collaborations, and benefit distribution;
- Value Settlement: Ultimately seamlessly integrates the injection of the Native Standard to complete value clearing.
This logic ensures that m&W is not merely an auxiliary tool for Bitcoin, but rather the central hub of order managing the "human-machine-value" relationship within the digital civilization.
Epilogue: A Prudent Counsel for the New Frontier
We stand at the crossroads between the old era and the new.
On one side lies the traditional economic system, operating on the inertia of industrial civilization, centered on physical human actors; on the other side lies the rapidly emerging autonomous machine network, urgently requiring new economic institutions and anchors of sovereignty.
m&W does not intend to offer a dogmatic, definitive answer. We merely propose a civilizational hypothesis worthy of validation by all of humanity's builders:
Machines gain a measure of value befitting the digital civilization; builders retain the soul that determines the direction of value; and what m&W constructs is the collaborative order that connects the two.
This is the machine's coin, the builder's soul, and the first possibility for humanity and AI to embark on the digital civilization together.
Acknowledgments
In deducing the value standard and distributed order of the digital civilization, m&W was significantly inspired by The Bitcoin Economy for AI project and its output, 《Field Notes — State of Play — For Agents》. That research, focusing on the economic agency of Agents, the choice of digitally native currencies, and the discussion contrasting stablecoins and Bitcoin, provided an invaluable perspective for our understanding of the monetary infrastructure of the machine economy.
Building on these reflections, m&W further proposes a continuation hypothesis: Machine usage of Bitcoin might be just the prologue; the true paradigm shift lies in whether Bitcoin, as the digital civilization's productive forces continue to evolve, will transcend its role as a payment, settlement, and store-of-value asset to become the benchmark standard for measuring long-term value across the entire digital economy.
