A consortium of Web3 companies has come together to create an open, borderless metaverse called OMA3, the Open Metaverse Alliance for Web3. The organization says its goal is to address key challenges of the emerging Metaverse, including protecting the freedom of information that users have.Joining the alliance with Animoca Brands are Alien Worlds, Dapper Labs, Decentraland, Star Atlas, and The Sandbox. In addition to the Web3 project already associated with Animoca Brands, the alliance includes DAO framework developer Wivity, virtual reality and gaming developer Space, and blockchain gaming company Upland. The announcement of this new blockchain-based organization follows the recent announcement of another Metaverse “confederation” — the Metaverse Standards Forum.
In June, tech giants including Meta, Microsoft, Sony and others
Announcing the establishment and launch of the Metaverse Standards Forum
(Metaverse Standards Forum), hosted by the Khronos Group, a non-profit consortium of 170 organizations supporting interoperability standards for industries such as 3D graphics, VR, AR, and machine learning. The new forum is free and open to any organization. It will focus on projects aimed at prototyping, hackathons, plugins, and open-source tools to facilitate testing and adoption of Metaverse standards. There are now more than 37 founding members of the Metaverse Standards Forum, including Meta, Microsoft, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Epic Games, and Chinese technology giants Alibaba, Huawei, etc. These companies are rare in allowing users to freely save and transfer data between different applications make achievements.
OMA3 aims to take a different approach.
"We believe that in a metaverse with no constraining walls, platforms will be interconnected and fully interoperable," OMA3 said in a blog post.
The organization said it is inviting all blockchain-based Metaverse companies to join the alliance.
According to OMA3, this new decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) will operate as a coalition whose four core principles are transparency, inclusiveness, decentralization and democratization.
"The standards we create are guided by true ownership and real-time interoperability," said OMA3.
OMA3 says it will build the infrastructure of the consortium to ensure that the Metaverse operates as a unified system in which digital assets, identities and data are permissionless and controlled by users rather than platforms. The group also claims that users will own their assets and will be able to freely transfer them to any OMA3 world without the permission of the individual platform.Animoca Brands is a digital entertainment, blockchain and gamification company that created the SAND and REVV tokens and released hit games like The Sandbox and Crazy Kings. It has also invested in several projects including Web3 giants OpenSea, Axie Infinity, Dapper Labs, Star Atlas and Alien Worlds.
Earlier this month, Animoca Brands announced
