Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi on Friday at
In an interview with Bloomberg
Said that the company will "absolutely" accept cryptocurrencies in the future.
“We’ve been having discussions (about cryptocurrencies),” he said. “I think what we’re seeing now from bitcoin and some of the other cryptocurrencies is that they’re quite valuable as a store of value.”
He added, "The transaction mechanism is expensive and not environmentally friendly. As the transaction mechanism becomes cheaper and more environmentally friendly, I think you will see us leaning more towards cryptocurrencies."
Bitcoin has often been criticized for its energy consumption and alleged environmental impact. To secure the bitcoin blockchain and create new bitcoins, the network undergoes a process called mining, which involves large computing machines competing to solve complex mathematical problems.Globally, this results in an annual electricity consumption on par with that of Argentina, according to Cambridge data. Uber's CEO, however, seems convinced that these problems will one day be fixed.Dara Khosrowshahi said, "Will Uber accept cryptocurrency in the future? Absolutely at some point. Now is not the right time. But we will accept it."
This isn't the first time Uber's CEO has voiced support for cryptocurrencies. In February last year,
Khosrowshahi says
, the firm “will consider cryptocurrencies and/or Bitcoin from a transactional currency perspective.”
