Diem chief wants users to trust Facebook, can he do it?
David Marcus, the head of “Facebook Coin”, showed everyone the upcoming Novi Wallet, noting that users don’t need to worry about security or privacy issues.
However, Facebook doesn't have a strong reputation on either front, and Marcus' claims may not convince his users.
Still, in a recent interview, Marcus stated his product and hoped users would give Diem a chance.
In an interview with Yahoo Finance, Marcus tried to reassure users, explaining that both Diem and Novi wallets are safe. No data will be used to serve ads to users, nor is there any evidence that Diem is related to Facebook's advertising model.
Marcus points out that from the beginning,Diem's infrastructure design avoids the "mixing" of financial and social data. No single entity can hold financial user data。
"You know, the way we designed it was in principle separating financial data from financial data, and it actually took a lot of effort to build it the right way."
Diem is trying to join the overseas retail remittance market, Marcus said,This is a huge market that needs to be built. He hopes users will give Diem a chance. Companies will do their best to overturn skepticism.
However, given past scandals, he admits it will be a long process.
“Over time, we plan to gain people’s trust so they will give us a chance to do other things. But it will take time, and I know that.”
Of course Facebook dominates social media,It's billed as the platform for America's baby boomers and has attracted 2.9 billion monthly active users. This means that Diem’s potential user base is larger than any platform in the crypto space today.
According to trend analysis, its highest user numbers are in India, the United States, and Brazil, and it doesn't seem to have stopped growing.
Still, 16 opinion pieces (so far) are overwhelmingly against when it comes to trusting Facebook and Diem.
While this may not represent a broad view, it can still be seen that100% of comments reject the idea of trusting Facebook to separate financial data。
One user described his concerns about political bias and censorship, which together make an untrustworthy "combination".
"For context, Facebook's history of politicism and its history of censoring free speech with a Democratic administration is not a trustworthy combination."
While Marcus indicated that Facebook would separate financial and social data, users were skeptical of the claim.
They said, "Facebook now tracks every transaction that users make,Collect statistics on retail businesses and sell them data on what people buy and where。”
