2. The usage scenarios of the central bank’s digital currency continue to sink
Since the internal testing of DCEP in some regions in April, there has been less news about the progress of DCEP. No news does not mean that the project is not progressing. While cooperating with Didi in this announcement, multiple sources also show that the central bank has cooperated with many Internet companies such as Meituan and Bilibili.
Didi now has 550 million registered users and made 190 million deliveries last year. Meituan has 450 million users, Bilibili has 150 million users, and the users are young and sticky.
In addition to these leading e-commerce companies, in April, after the central bank’s digital currency conducted internal closed pilot tests in Shenzhen, Suzhou, Xiong’an, Chengdu and future Winter Olympics scenes, it was even used in 19 merchants including McDonald’s and Starbucks. After testing, it can be seen that the central bank's digital currency pilot scenarios have expanded to real life scenarios such as retail, entertainment, and catering, and more closely reach C-end users.
From the above pilot areas of DCEP, it can be seen that the central bank’s digital currency has been looking for usage scenarios in cooperation with Internet companies, and the central bank’s digital currency pays more attention to C-end users, because the main user group of the central bank’s digital currency is C-end users. Through cooperation with leading Internet companies, DCEP can enter the scene of high-frequency use by users as soon as possible, and high-frequency use will also help to test various technical performances of the entire digital currency technology system, such as throughput, real-time, fault tolerance , security and other aspects. Commercial value and technological development complement each other.
Ali Loveys, chief privacy officer of ConsenSys Health, said that the biggest challenge in the blockchain field is not the technology itself, but whether the business model or values make sense. If business value doesn't make sense, it's hard to move technology forward.
Some people say, why didn't DCEP cooperate with Alipay and WeChat Pay? I think Alipay and WeChat Pay, which are both payment tools, have a high probability of cooperation. Because for the central bank’s digital currency, where there is electronic payment, DCEP must be used for payment. In order to reduce the difficulty of using DCEP, is it possible to embed a DCEP payment port in Alipay and WeChat Pay? As early as 2018, Ma Yun said in many public occasions: "As long as the country needs it, Alipay will be handed over to the country at any time", let alone cooperation.
