Analysis: US August CPI accelerates, market rate hike expectations rapidly heat up

Odaily reports that due to gasoline costs rebounding after two consecutive months of decline, US consumer prices accelerated in August, reinforcing financial market expectations that the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates next week. The US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Friday that the consumer price index rose 0.4% month-over-month last month, following a modest 0.1% increase in July. Over the 12 months through August, consumer inflation rose 3.4%, unchanged from July's increase.

Thursday's data had already shown that the August producer price index rose, with several key components posting strong gains, and these components feed into the calculation of PCE inflation. This, combined with last week's strong August employment report, further boosted market expectations for a rate hike next week. After the release of the US August CPI data, the market estimated the probability of a Fed rate hike next week at about 90%.

SlowMist Discloses Liquid Vulnerability Details: Attacker Minted 3,998.5 L-BTC Without Collateral, Approximately 598.5 BTC Still Not Returned

Odaily reports that SlowMist has disclosed that the Liquid Network was attacked on September 6 via a Rangeproof verification cache key collision vulnerability. The attacker minted approximately 3,998.5 L-BTC without collateral — with no corresponding BTC peg-in — and then within minutes converted them to BTC on the Bitcoin mainnet via peg-out. After the incident, approximately 3,400 BTC was returned to the Liquid Federation peg wallet, but approximately 598.5 BTC remains under the attacker's control.

SlowMist noted that the root cause of the vulnerability lies in the fact that the Rangeproof verification cache key in Elements did not include length prefixes when concatenating multiple variable-length fields, allowing different parameter combinations to potentially generate the same cache key. The attacker triggered a cache collision by constructing transactions, causing nodes to hit a "verification passed" cached result, thereby bypassing secp256k1_rangeproof_verify and the minimum amount check, ultimately accepting outputs not backed by real assets and completing the L-BTC minting. SlowMist stated that it has traced the fund flows on the Bitcoin side and completed its analysis of the incident.

"White-haired Stock God" Serenity Blasts X: Beware of Becoming a "Paid Engagement Farming" Marketing Network

Odaily News: "White-haired Stock God" Serenity published a post blasting social media platform X, stating that X should crack down on all "engagement networks" that pay others to quote or comment on their posts. Some companies pay influencers to comment on or quote the company's posts; they also mass-create new associated accounts with "Finance" or country names, and once these accounts reach a certain scale, they boost engagement metrics through methods such as cross-referencing each other's posts.

Serenity added that these associated accounts could eventually accumulate tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of followers, and further leverage their influence to boost the visibility of other associated accounts. If this model continues to develop, X could ultimately be dominated by "engagement networks" marketing around company products, while independent, authentic voices on the platform would be squeezed out.

India's Securities and Exchange Board: Three institutions raise $1.072 billion through tokenized corporate bonds

Odaily reports: The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) stated that under the Demat 2.0 pilot, three issuers have raised a cumulative 102.5 billion rupees (approximately $1.072 billion) through tokenized corporate bonds. The pilot utilizes distributed ledger technology to issue, hold, and settle corporate bonds.

Among them, REC was the first to complete a 50 billion rupee fundraising on September 7, with 18 investors participating; L&T raised 50 billion rupees on September 9, subscribed by 4 investors; IIFL raised 2.5 billion rupees on the same day, subscribed by 1 investor.

SEBI stated that Demat 2.0 records corporate bonds as native digital tokens on depository institutions' distributed ledgers, and connects to wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) through the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Unified Market Interface, enabling atomic settlement of bonds and funds, which is expected to shorten post-issuance fund settlement time from the traditional 2 to 3 days to same-day.

SEBI emphasized that tokenized bonds do not constitute a new category of corporate bonds, and their ISIN, issuer obligations, coupons, maturity dates, covenants, ratings, and investor rights remain consistent with traditional electronic corporate bonds. Currently, the first phase of the pilot is aimed at institutional issuance, with secondary trading and retail investor participation to be advanced in subsequent phases. (The Block)
