Lagarde intervened to block Binance's MiCA license application in Greece

Odaily: European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde intervened in Binance's application for a Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) license in Greece, asking Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis not to approve the application. Once approved, the license could cover EU member states through the "passporting mechanism."

Greek regulators had previously informed the European Securities and Markets Authority of their intention to approve the application, but Binance withdrew it in mid-June before regulators made a formal decision. Lagarde was reportedly concerned about Binance's past compliance issues and the possibility that it could further expand the dominance of U.S. dollar stablecoins in Europe and affect the progress of the digital euro.

Grayscale: This Fed rate hike differs from the 2022 tightening cycle

Odaily reports: Digital asset management company Grayscale stated in an analysis published on September 17 that the latest Federal Reserve rate hike is closer to a "mid-cycle adjustment" rather than a major monetary policy shift.

The Federal Open Market Committee raised the target rate range by 25 basis points to 3.75%–4% on September 16, stating that the hike aims to bring inflation back to the 2% target in a more timely manner. Grayscale believes that this rate hike, along with a possible second hike later this year, is unlikely to cause major changes in the digital asset market.

Grayscale noted that from March 2022 to July 2023, the Federal Reserve raised rates by a cumulative 525 basis points, with sustained tightening increasing returns on cash and yield-bearing assets and raising the opportunity cost of holding Bitcoin; the current environment, by contrast, is a single rate hike following years of hikes, cuts, and holding steady.

Grayscale stated that the impact of rate hikes will vary by crypto business model. Stablecoin issuers could benefit from increased interest income on reserve assets, and higher yields on tokenized bonds and money market funds could also attract capital inflows into on-chain financial products. On September 17, Bitcoin briefly rose above $77,000, with short position liquidations in the crypto market reaching nearly $260 million during the rebound. (Bitcoin.com News)

"Fed Whisperer": If the Fed Hikes Again in October, Warsh's Relationship with Trump May Face Another Test

Odaily News: "Fed Whisperer" Nick Timiraos posted on X that Trump has consistently criticized the Fed for keeping interest rates too high, but after the Fed hiked rates this week, he claimed that he had already expressed approval of the decision during a phone call with Fed Chair Warsh a few days before the decision.

According to people familiar with the matter, the call between Trump and Warsh came as a surprise to many of the president's close advisers. This "truce" clearly shows that Warsh has temporarily reversed the previously tense relationship in which the White House viewed the Fed as an adversary. The risk is that this situation may last only until the Fed raises rates again.

A senior government official said that if the Fed decides to raise rates again in October (on the eve of the midterm elections), Warsh may find himself subject to stricter scrutiny from Trump and his advisers.
