US media reveals inside story of US-Iran ceasefire deal: Iranian President and Central Bank Governor jointly urged the Supreme Leader to "sign quickly"

2026-07-04 12:57

Odaily Odaily Planet Daily News According to four officials familiar with the details of the meeting, during the final stage of negotiations, when Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei hesitated to approve the preliminary ceasefire agreement, Iranian President Pezeshkian visited him. The Iranian President told the Supreme Leader that the economic situation was dire and the US naval blockade was strangling Iran, threatening to resign if he refused the agreement. Additionally, Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati also wrote to Khamenei, stating that the country faced a severe budget crisis and that critical food and medical supplies would run out by the end of August if the naval blockade continued.

In the letter, Hemmati explained that it was impossible for Iran to sell oil on the required scale and find alternative trade routes. These statements played a key role in Mojtaba's final decision to support the agreement. In a brief public statement, he said that although he opposed the agreement "in principle," if the President obtained the support of the Supreme National Security Council, he would instruct the President to proceed. Pezeshkian stated that the council approved the agreement by a vote of 12 in favor out of 13. (Jinshi)
