Iranian sources say Iran insists on retaining control over the Strait of Hormuz

2026-07-01 09:41

Odaily Odaily News According to two high-level Iranian sources, Iran is determined to seek international recognition of its control over the Strait of Hormuz and its right to charge fees for vessels entering and leaving the Gulf, even if force is required. Under a provisional agreement reached with the United States this month aimed at ending their three-month conflict, Iran agreed to allow vessels free passage through the strait for 60 days. However, Iran believes the wording of the agreement allows it to continue controlling which vessels can pass and the routes these vessels take within the narrow waterway.

The sources said Iran is also determined to ensure long-term formal recognition of this control after the provisional agreement expires; until a consensus is reached on this issue, its negotiators will not move on to other contentious topics in the peace talks with Washington. (Jin Shi)
