Two Hong Kong youths involved in a HK$2 million USDT scam have been sentenced to a reformatory.

According to a report by Hong Kong's Ming Pao, the Hong Kong District Court today handed down a verdict in a USDT fraud case involving HK$2 million. Two 18-year-olds were sentenced to a reformatory for committing the scam.

The case details revealed that in November last year, a victim went to a money exchange in Tsim Sha Tsui to purchase over HK$2 million worth of USDT. Following instructions, the victim handed the cash to two defendants and placed it in the store's safe. After repeatedly inquiring about receiving the USDT and still not receiving it, the victim requested a refund, only to discover the cash was missing. The investigation revealed that the safe was separated from a neighboring shop by only a black sheet of paper, allowing for easy access to the cash via a secret passage. The two defendants were arrested while attempting to escape through this passage.

Judge Cheng Nien-Tzu stated that although the two defendants were not the masterminds, they played an indispensable role as pawns in the scam, involving a huge sum of money and clearly premeditated. Considering that the two were only 18 years old at the time of the crime and had no prior criminal record, a reformatory would be more conducive to their rehabilitation than direct imprisonment.
