Stripe Acquires OpenRouter: The Ultimate Piece of the AI Agent Payment Infrastructure Puzzle

On July 24, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal, payment giant Stripe is in talks to acquire AI model aggregator OpenRouter. The deal could be announced soon, but negotiations could still fall through or another buyer could emerge. Sources said the acquisition values OpenRouter at approximately $10 billion, a significant jump from its $1.3 billion post-money valuation when it completed a $113 million Series B funding round in May this year. OpenRouter's investors include a16z, Menlo Ventures, and CapitalG, the venture arm of Google parent company Alphabet.
On the surface, this deal appears to be a pure AI infrastructure acquisition. However, Stripe's identity has long since transcended that of a credit card acquirer. Over the past year and a half, it has spent $1.1 billion acquiring stablecoin company Bridge, and incubated its own stablecoin settlement public chain, Tempo. In essence, Stripe is one of the world's most aggressive participants in stablecoin infrastructure.
Prior to this, several major tech companies had approached OpenRouter regarding a potential acquisition. Stripe and OpenRouter already have a business relationship: OpenRouter has long used Stripe Invoicing, Stripe Tax, and Radar to handle its global billing and risk control. In a sense, this rumored acquisition is a vertical integration of its own customer.
Payments, Wallets, Ordering, and Settlement – Stripe Covers It All
In February 2025, Stripe completed its acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure company Bridge for $1.1 billion, its largest-ever M&A deal, solving the problem of stablecoin on/off-ramps.
Four months later, Stripe acquired embedded wallet infrastructure provider Privy, which had already served over 75 million accounts, solving the wallet and identity problem.
In late September of the same year, Stripe and OpenAI jointly launched the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), introducing Instant Checkout within ChatGPT. Through a new payment primitive called "Shared Payment Token," this allows AI Agents to make purchases on behalf of users without accessing their real payment credentials, solving the problem of how AI Agents place orders.
In March 2026, Stripe's payment public chain Tempo, incubated with Paradigm, launched its mainnet, simultaneously releasing the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP). From then on, AI Agents could autonomously handle small, high-frequency payments on Tempo using USDC, complete with authorization scope controls like spending limits and merchant whitelists, eliminating the need for manual approval of each transaction. This solved the problem of how AI Agents pay.
At the end of June, Stripe, along with over 140 other companies including Visa, Mastercard, BlackRock, and Coinbase, joined the newly formed stablecoin alliance, Open USD. The CEO of this alliance, operated by the independent company Open Standard, is none other than Bridge co-founder Zach Abrams.
Viewed individually, each step is just "stablecoin business expansion." Seen together, Stripe has incorporated all the stages an AI Agent needs to complete a transaction—ordering, payment, settlement—into its own business scope.
OpenRouter Complements AI Model Services and Billing
OpenRouter doesn't produce models; it acts as a "model routing" layer: aggregating over 60 providers and 300+ models, helping developers compare prices, switch between models, and automatically failover to a backup model when one fails, taking roughly a 5% cut per API call.
Its founder, Alex Atallah, is the co-founder and former CTO of the NFT trading platform OpenSea. According to data disclosed by OpenRouter, its annualized revenue reached $50 million in March 2026, a significant increase from $19 million at the end of 2025. It boasts over 1.5 million monthly active developers and handles tens of billions of inference requests.

Tempo and MPP solved "how AI Agents pay," and ACP solved "how AI Agents place orders." Now, OpenRouter plugs the gap regarding "which model an AI Agent should call and how to bill for it."
Putting these three layers together means that, theoretically, from model selection and inference execution to the final commercial settlement, an entire AI Agent task could potentially flow through Stripe's pipeline. This aligns closely with the "AWS for money" positioning publicly stated by its Head of Crypto.
Such ambition is not unique to Stripe. Circle launched its Agent Stack for AI Agents in May, featuring Agent Wallets and a micropayment tool called Nanopayments; Google released the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).
According to data from agenteconomy.to, the x402 protocol, led by Coinbase and deployed on chains like Base and Solana, has processed over 190 million on-chain transactions as of July 23. Building payment infrastructure for AI Agents is becoming a shared strategic judgment among multiple tech giants.
But the reality is sobering. A report released in May by crypto trading and research firm Keyrock showed that in the year from May 2025 to April 2026, the total cumulative on-chain payment volume settled by AI Agents was approximately $73 million. In comparison, the annual settlement volume for stablecoins was a staggering $46 trillion, meaning the former accounts for less than one ten-thousandth of the latter. Current valuations are more rooted in narrative and early-mover positioning, and are far from reflecting true scale.
Stripe Aims for More Than Just an Aggregator Business
Financial analysis website FourWeekMBA, based on OpenRouter's publicly available token usage ranking data, calculated that the token share of US models on the OpenRouter platform has dropped from about 70% in June 2025 to roughly 30% in June 2026. Chinese open-source models like DeepSeek are becoming the primary source of usage volume.
The deal is also far from finalized. The Wall Street Journal report noted that negotiations could still break down, or another buyer could step in. Stripe itself is also simultaneously partnering with private equity firm Advent International in a bid to acquire PayPal, stretching its focus and capital.
But regardless of whether this acquisition ultimately goes through, Stripe's path over the past 18 months is clear enough. It is no longer content with being the cash register of the AI era; it aims to become the default infrastructure provider on the link between AI and its users.
For the blockchain industry, the price tag of this M&A deal might not be the most important aspect. What truly warrants attention is whether stablecoins, leveraging the AI Agent economy, can find their first scalable machine-to-machine payment use case, thereby validating the correlation and synergistic value between AI and blockchain.
