  • Core Thesis: The real identity of on-chain detective ZachXBT (real name Zachary Wolk) was exposed through legal documents, sparking controversy over selective enforcement, conflicts of interest, and alleged illegal actions, challenging his persona of "anonymous justice."
  • Key Elements:
    1. ZachXBT's identity was revealed due to leaked defamation lawsuit documents filed against him by "Machi Big Brother" Jeffery Huang. User Matthew confirmed it as Zachary Wolk through public databases.
    2. Matthew criticized ZachXBT for offering a $10,000 bounty for the passport information of the LAB founder, noting this could constitute a federal felony in the US (punishable by up to 15 years in prison).
    3. Before publishing an investigation, 12 new addresses heavily accumulated Axiom tokens, profiting $1.2 million, leading to allegations of information leakage. ZachXBT admitted to contacting the Axiom team.
    4. ZachXBT sold all ZACHXBT tokens airdropped to him by others, profiting nearly $4 million. He claimed this was to protect his reputation, but was accused of "inconsistency between words and actions."
    5. ZachXBT has received funding from donors including Binance, Justin Sun, and Hyperliquid. Matthew pointed out he has never exposed negative incidents related to these donors, indicating selective investigation.
    6. ZachXBT's recent criticisms of small-cap tokens like RAVE and LAB led to price drops, causing investor losses. He was accused of acting with personal bias and harming retail investor interests.

ZachXBT, a person who insists on punishing evil and promoting good in the dark forest of Web3, playing the role of Gotham's Batman, has recently had their true identity seemingly exposed.

Through the lawsuit documents filed by "Big Brother" Matt Huang against ZachXBT, a user named Matthew learned their name and location, and successfully found this "anonymous hero" using local public databases.

In June 2022, ZachXBT published a lengthy Medium article detailing accusations against Matt Huang for involvement in multiple "scam projects," including Mithril, Formosa Financial, Machi X, Cream Finance, and Swag Finance. They further alleged that Huang misappropriated approximately 22,000 ETH in project funds from Formosa Financial, providing on-chain transaction data as evidence.

Huang believed these accusations severely damaged his reputation and caused financial losses. He repeatedly asked ZachXBT to delete or modify the article, but the request was refused. On June 16, 2023, Huang officially filed a defamation lawsuit against ZachXBT in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, demanding an apology and compensation. Huang stated he only wanted an apology, and any compensation would be donated to charity.

It was in the documents from this lawsuit that Matthew found clues: ZachXBT's real name is Zachary Wolk, residing in Kingsland, Texas.

Using this information, Matthew found Zachary Wolk's details in a swimming competition database, confirming he was a swimmer for Austin Vandegrift High School in Texas.

This public doxxing drew significant criticism. Some in the comments noted that after the related documents were published, anyone determined enough could have already learned ZachXBT's identity, and choosing not to reveal it publicly was a form of protection. Others pointed out that ZachXBT has tracked on-chain activities involving terrorism financing and the North Korean state-sponsored hacker group Lazarus Group, and recklessly exposing their identity could put their life at risk.

However, revealing the identity wasn't the whole point of the post. As some users noted, the public information was already searchable. What Matthew truly wanted to convey was that ZachXBT is not without flaws.

Matthew stated that on May 7 of this year, ZachXBT offered a $10,000 bounty for information on LAB founder Vova Sadkov. The bounty explicitly requested "passport or government-issued ID information," but in the U.S., paying someone for their passport information is illegal, carrying a maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison.

In February of this year, ZachXBT publicly tweeted about launching a "major investigation" into one of the most profitable sectors in cryptocurrency. Polymarket even opened a prediction market for this event, with total trading volume reaching $40 million. However, just hours before ZachXBT revealed the target of the investigation, 12 newly created addresses took heavy positions on Axiom at low odds (unlikely to be investigated), profiting $1.2 million.

ZachXBT later responded to this, stating they had contacted the Axiom team before the announcement, which might have led to the information leak. Subsequently, ZachXBT said they would not make such previews in the future.

Looking back further, in January 2025, an anonymous developer airdropped 50% (500 million tokens) of the total supply of a newly issued ZACHXBT token to ZachXBT's address. ZachXBT then profited nearly $4 million by selling these tokens. ZachXBT stated that the issuance of a token bearing their name was not authorized, and the sale was to protect their reputation.

Clearly, Matthew felt this behavior smacked of hypocrisy, akin to "biting the hand that feeds you."

Finally, Matthew offered a highly subjective "criticism": ZachXBT has received donations from Changpeng Zhao, Justin Sun, Kraken co-founder Jesse Powell, and Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal, as well as donations from projects like Optimism, Hyperliquid, and Bybit. Consequently, Matthew argued, you never see ZachXBT exposing negative events related to these donors.

Matthew pointed out that between December 2024 and January 2026, ZachXBT published negative investigations on Hyperliquid seven times. On January 18, 2026, Hyperliquid transferred 10,000 HYPE tokens to ZachXBT, after which ZachXBT never mentioned Hyperliquid again.

What Matthew didn't mention is that ZachXBT had previously accused Binance of insider trading and market manipulation, but later became an official partner of BNB Chain in combating scams and tracking funds, a move that also sparked considerable controversy at the time.

In conclusion, Matthew posed a profound question to ZachXBT's supporters: "Don't idolize people. The standards you apply to others should also apply to ZachXBT."

ZachXBT has indeed been embroiled in some controversy recently. Over the past few months, ZachXBT questioned the rapidly surging RAVE and LAB tokens, accusing both projects of having highly concentrated token supplies and engaging in insider trading. Subsequently, as Matthew noted, they offered a bounty for the personal information of LAB's founder.

Before these two incidents escalated, even when ZachXBT's actions were somewhat controversial, they were largely drowned out by voices of support and understanding. However, this recent extreme act sparked considerable backlash. Besides believing the public bounty for private information was "getting ahead of themselves," many couldn't understand why ZachXBT, who had previously advocated for retail investors, would target two tokens that surged during the bear market. Their actions even caused a short-term price drop in the tokens, ultimately leading to losses for many retail investors.

For many Web3 investors, the extreme volatility of small-cap tokens isn't an anomaly but a target of study, and insider trading is an unspoken rule of the industry. Therefore, many critics believe ZachXBT's choice of these two targets may have been influenced by personal emotions, rather than being purely selfless as before.

In Matthew's eyes, ZachXBT has fallen from grace. Perhaps ZachXBT initially aspired to be an on-chain detective punishing evil after being scammed themselves. But gradually, this initial intention became less pure. Whether tempted by profit or threatened by powerful interests, there is indeed evidence suggesting ZachXBT now exhibits some selectivity in their targets.

Is a flawed hero still a hero? Judging from the comments, most people still answered yes. Many believe that no one is perfect; perhaps some conflicts of interest exist, but that doesn't erase the fact that ZachXBT has bravely stood up against injustice. After all, they are still on the front lines, and that is certainly better than staying silent.
