Jan was invited to participate in the Berlin Blockchain Week to answer your questions about what it's like to work with the world's top blockchain developers.

Editor's note: This article is from Nervos, author: Jan, published with permission.

I received an invitation from 1kx[1] before, and I hope that Nervos Network can participate in the blockchain week in Berlin, the capital of Germany, from September 5th to 11th. The interesting thing about Berlin blockchain week is that,This is an event that does not have a single sponsor, but is jointly organized by the Berlin blockchain community. It consists of a series of large and small conferences and meetups. In recent years, Berlin has gradually become a European crypto center (Here crypto stands for cryptocurrency, not cyptographyfirst level title

Dezentral

Dezentral[2] is a discussionIndustry developments and new projectss meeting. In the morning, on behalf of Nervos Network and Oasis labs[3]/ Tezos[4] / Spacemesh[5], I participated in a panel hosted by Howard Wu (from Dekrypt[6]), the theme is "Beyond Ethereum", simply Say, discuss what the next generation of blockchain should look like after Bitcoin and Ethereum. Obviously, everyone has their own ideas on the direction of the next-generation blockchain: Oasislabs hopes to construct a private cloud computing platform through trusted hardware and blockchain, Tezos focuses on on-chain governance, and Spacemesh hopes to use Proof of Space-Time To solve the problems faced by PoW, we hope to design an encrypted economic network from scratch, and solve the dilemma of the impossible triangle through a layered architecture. In a word, the next-generation blockchain has three paths: performance, privacy, and governance, and a project can take one or more of them.

Great discussion and great moderation by Howard. A question that impresses me deeply is about timing: Is it time for the new public chain to catch up with bitcoin/ethereum? We have had many discussions on this issue ourselves. In the end, everyone tends to think that the opportunities are still great, but the threshold for participating in the competition is getting higher and higher. The reason for the great opportunity is that the industry is still in its early stages, and the proportion of blockchain users is far from the same level as that of the Internet. There is a lot of room for development in both technology and scenarios. However, it cannot be ignored that the rapid development of the blockchain industry and considerable capital inflows in recent years have also brought a large number of talents, including many top teams, so participating inThe threshold for public chain competition is naturally getting higher and higher. In the early stage, it is difficult for a new public chain to start slowly like bitcoin/ethereum purely relying on the power of the community. It must invest more resources and spend more energy to push the project through the growth period and gain the greatest momentum in the shortest time. From this perspective, seeking the help of venture capital institutions in the early stage is the only way for public chain projects at this stage.

In the afternoon I made a report on Nervos Networkspecial speech, explained what is Layer 1 for Layer 2, and also introduced our progress on CKB VM. In the past few months of work, we have done a lot of research and prototyping, and finally decided to use the RISC-V[7] open instruction set as the instruction set of CKB VM instead of developing based on WebAssembly. CKB will be the first blockchain in the world to use the RISC-V instruction set! As for why we think RISC-V is the most suitable instruction set architecture for CKB VM, the CKB team will write a special article, so I won't go into details here.

In a subsequent panel composed of several investors, the host asked a question: What recent industry trends do you think have aroused your interest? How does your portfolio reflect this trend? Lasse[8] of 1kx gave an interesting answer, to the effect that before the rise of the Internet, some people devoted themselves to the research of underlying protocols, and finally produced TCP/IP and HTTP, which form the basis of today's Internet. Similarly, many people in our blockchain today are conducting research on underlying protocols, andfirst level title

imToken[9] organized an event to explore the similarities and differences between the Eastern and Western blockchain industries, at the fullnode (a co-working space) where many blockchain teams gather. In this meetup, each project had a 5-minute introduction and a 5-minute question and answer, and then made a half-hour Panel. The participating developers were also very interested in Nervos from China and asked a lot of questions. Lasse, the moderator of the panel, saidAbout 90% of the blockchain community in Berlin are developersfirst level title

EthBerlin Hackathon

EthBerlin Hackathon

The whole event was well prepared, the organization was well organized, and the management of the venue was extremely strict. If it were not for the contestants or referees and other related personnel, they would be ruthlessly blocked from the door. I wonder if this is a manifestation of the German character? Very high quality overall, probably the best hackathon I've ever organized. The developer community here gives medeep impressionThere are two places:

  • Fair and transparent referee mechanism [11]. The organizer has put a lot of effort into the refereeing process: EthBerlinAll referees are randomly divided into 12 groups, each group has three people, and there must be one referee from each of the three backgrounds of technology, VC and community (wildcard judge). According to different backgrounds, the referees' scores have different weights in different aspects. Each team that finally submits its results will be randomly assigned to two groups of referees to conduct a demo, and there will be two demo opportunities in total, so as to reduce the influence of referees and improve the fairness of the game. Each demo has 5 minutes for introduction and 3 minutes for questions. I acted as a technical judge with a VC buddy from SF and Arjun Hassard from NuCypher, scoring 11 teams in total. In the entire scoring system, technology occupies the greatest weight, technical difficulty and project completion are key considerations, and it is difficult for PPT projects to be recognized. The originality of the project and its influence on society are also the key objects of investigation. Repetitive ideas or simple combinations of other people's codes will not be very marketable. After all the scoring is over, 10 winning teams will be produced, and will be announced, introduced and awarded at the end. Generally speaking, the judging process is fair, rigorous, and high-quality, which ensures that excellent projects can stand out and the gold content of the awards.

  • There is an atmosphere of healthy competition and bold cooperation between the teams. It is often seen that an immature project can be supported by another immature project, and the two appear in a symbiotic rather than competitive relationshipWelfare

During the week, I also participated in a series of various small gatherings, the quality of which was high or low, the conversations were either interesting or boring, and the participants were both flickering and hardcore. A question we often reflect on is,Developers in China, the United States, and Europe do not have much difference in ability, but the atmosphere of the developer community is very different. What is the reason?

There are two ways for the evolution of the developer community. One is to form a relatively independent and closed ecology like Japan. In the long run, this is not a good way, because the influence of technology also depends on the scope of the audience- Birth It is a pity that ruby from Japan will grow and weaken as rails from Europe grows and weakens. The other way is to change yourself
