OpenAI Exposes New AI Fraud Model: Cambodian Criminal Ring Uses ChatGPT to Run Investment and Romance Scams
Odaily reported that OpenAI recently disclosed it has successfully disrupted a cyber fraud ring based in Cambodia that used ChatGPT to assist in various scams, including investment fraud, romance scams, gambling fraud, and impersonation of law enforcement. The investigation was initiated based on leads shared with WhatsApp's security team. The group was found to have used ChatGPT to create fake online identities, generate and translate fraudulent scripts, produce promotional content for scams, and assist with day-to-day operational tasks.
OpenAI stated that it has banned ChatGPT accounts linked to the operation, shared relevant threat indicators with industry partners and relevant agencies, and taken measures to prevent these attackers from regaining access to its services. While the specific financial losses caused by the fraud network have yet to be confirmed, based on communications among the scammers themselves, the group may have reached hundreds of victims, with some conversations mentioning victims losing thousands of dollars.
