Stripe is turning every step of an AI Agent into its own business by leveraging a stablecoin settlement layer.
AI Summary

  • Key Insight: Payment giant Stripe is acquiring AI model routing platform OpenRouter at an estimated valuation of around $10 billion. By integrating payment, settlement, wallets, and AI model invocation, it aims to build the default infrastructure for the AI Agent economy. However, the current scale of on-chain payments for AI Agents is still minimal, placing this narrative in an early-stage deployment phase.
  • Key Elements:
    1. Stripe plans to acquire OpenRouter for approximately $10 billion, a significant jump from its $1.3 billion valuation in its Series B funding round in May. OpenRouter aggregates over 60 providers and 300+ models, boasting an annualized revenue of $50 million.
    2. Over the past 18 months, Stripe has built a complete closed loop: acquiring stablecoin infrastructure provider Bridge ($1.1 billion), wallet infrastructure provider Privy, and launching the ACP protocol along with the Tempo payment public chain. This addresses issues related to AI Agent fiat on/off ramps, wallets, order placement, and settlement.
    3. OpenRouter fills the gap in the "which model should an AI Agent call and under what billing metrics" stage. Combined with Stripe's existing system, it theoretically covers the entire chain from model selection to commercial settlement.
    4. Industry competition is intensifying: Circle has launched Agent Stack for AI Agents, Google released Agent Payments Protocol, and the Coinbase-led x402 protocol has already processed over 190 million on-chain transactions.
    5. Real-world data challenges: A Keyrock report indicates that from May 2025 to April 2026, the total on-chain settlement volume for AI Agents was only $73 million, accounting for less than 0.01% of the stablecoin's $46 trillion annual settlement volume.

On July 24, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal, payment giant Stripe is in talks to acquire OpenRouter, an AI model routing platform, with a deal potentially announced soon. However, negotiations could still fall through, or other buyers may emerge. Sources say the acquisition values OpenRouter at approximately $10 billion, a significant jump from its $1.3 billion post-money valuation in May this year when it completed a $113 million Series B funding round. OpenRouter's investors include a16z, Menlo Ventures, and CapitalG, the venture arm of Google parent Alphabet.

On the surface, this deal appears to be a pure AI infrastructure merger, but Stripe's identity has long transcended that of a simple credit card acquirer. Over the past year and a half, it has spent $1.1 billion acquiring stablecoin company Bridge and incubated its own stablecoin settlement public chain, Tempo, making it one of the most aggressive participants in stablecoin infrastructure globally.

Before this, several large tech companies had approached OpenRouter regarding a potential acquisition. Stripe and OpenRouter already have an existing business relationship: OpenRouter has long used Stripe Invoicing, Stripe Tax, and Radar to handle its global billing and risk control. This rumored acquisition is, in a sense, a vertical integration of its own customer.

Payments, Wallets, Checkout, Settlement: Stripe Has Covered It All

In February 2025, Stripe completed its acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure company Bridge for $1.1 billion, its largest-ever acquisition, solving the problem of stablecoin on/off ramps.

Four months later, Stripe acquired embedded wallet infrastructure provider Privy, which had served over 75 million accounts, solving the wallet and identity problem.

In late September of the same year, Stripe and OpenAI jointly launched the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), introducing Instant Checkout within ChatGPT. Using a new payment primitive called the "Shared Payment Token," it allows AI Agents to make purchases without accessing users' real payment credentials, solving the problem of how AI Agents place orders.

In March 2026, Stripe and Paradigm's incubated payment public chain, Tempo, launched its mainnet, simultaneously releasing the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP). AI Agents can now autonomously make micropayments and high-frequency payments using USDC on Tempo, equipped with authorization controls such as spending limits and merchant whitelists, eliminating the need for manual approval of each transaction and solving the problem of how AI Agents pay.

In late June, Stripe joined over 140 companies, including Visa, Mastercard, BlackRock, and Coinbase, in the newly formed stablecoin alliance, Open USD. The alliance is operated by the independent company Open Standard, whose CEO is Bridge co-founder Zach Abrams.

Individually, each step is just an "expansion of stablecoin business." Collectively, Stripe has brought the ordering, payment, and settlement stages required for an AI Agent to complete a transaction entirely within its own business scope.

OpenRouter Completes the AI Model Service and Billing Puzzle

OpenRouter doesn't create models; it acts as a "model routing" layer: aggregating over 60 providers and over 300 models, it helps developers compare prices, switch between models, and automatically fall back to a backup model if one fails, taking an approximately 5% cut per API call.

Its founder, Alex Atallah, is the co-founder and former CTO of the NFT marketplace OpenSea. According to data disclosed by OpenRouter itself, its annualized revenue in March 2026 had reached $50 million, a significant increase from $19 million at the end of 2025. It boasts over 1.5 million monthly active developers and processes tens of billions of inference requests.

Tempo and MPP solved "how AI Agents pay," ACP solved "how AI Agents place orders," and OpenRouter fills the gap of "which model an AI Agent should call and how usage is billed."

When these three layers are combined, it means that from model selection, inference call, to the final commercial settlement of an AI Agent task, theoretically everything can pass through Stripe's pipeline. This aligns with the "AWS of Money" positioning previously publicly advocated by its head of crypto business.

This ambition is not unique to Stripe. In May, Circle launched Agent Stack for AI Agents, including Agent Wallets and a micropayment tool called Nanopayments; Google released the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).

According to data from agenteconomy.to, the x402 protocol, led by Coinbase and deployed on chains like Base and Solana, has processed over 190 million on-chain transactions as of July 23. Building payment infrastructure for AI Agents is becoming a shared conviction among multiple industry giants.

However, the reality is more sobering. A May report by crypto trading and research firm Keyrock showed that from May 2025 to April 2026, the total value of on-chain settlements processed by AI Agents over the year was approximately $73 million. In comparison, the total annual settlement volume of stablecoins reached $46 trillion, meaning the former represents less than 0.01% of the latter. Current valuations are built more on narratives and early-mover advantages; there's still a long way to go before achieving real scale.

Stripe Wants More Than Just a Routing Business

Based on publicly available token usage data from OpenRouter, financial analysis website FourWeekMBA calculated that the token share of US models on the OpenRouter platform dropped from approximately 70% in June 2025 to about 30% in June 2026. Chinese open-source models like DeepSeek are becoming the primary driver of usage volume.

The deal is far from finalized. The Wall Street Journal reported that negotiations could still collapse, or another buyer might step in. Stripe itself is also simultaneously teaming up with private equity firm Advent International in a bid for PayPal, stretching its focus and capital.

Regardless of whether this acquisition ultimately materializes, Stripe's path over the past 18 months is clear enough. It is no longer content to be just the cash register of the AI era; it aims to become the default infrastructure provider on the link between AI and its users.

For the blockchain industry, the price tag of this acquisition might not be the most crucial aspect. What truly warrants attention is whether stablecoins can leverage the AI Agent economy to find their first scalable machine-to-machine payment scenario, thereby validating the relevance and synergistic value between AI and blockchain.
