Drand
This year is fordrandIt’s been a very busy year for the team and League of Entropy! In the past 12 months, as expected, our drand nodes have served over 60 billion (600, 000, 000, 000!) random requests while maintaining 100% uptime as a distributed threshold network. Through 15 distributed key generation and re-sharing ceremonies, League of Entropy has evolved from running a default beacon chain on its testnet and mainnet networks to running two beacon chains of different frequencies on both networks ( 30 s and 3 s). The League of Entropy has also grown from 17 partners to 21 today, with more and more organizations joining it, committed to providing free, fair, and verifiable public randomness so that anyone can use public products.
At the same time, the drand team also participated in 9 different events and organized 2 summits, thus continuing its efforts to spread the word about drand, provide the best DevEx possible when using it, and educate smart contract developers about using it on the chain The importance of appropriate, unbiased and unpredictable randomness.
We are also building new applications using drand on all networks that currently support drand, from Filecoin to Sui to Cosmos (via the Nois network). The team is busy bringing BLS precompilers to FVM and EVM, thereby reducing gas costs for on-chain verification on Filecoin and Ethereum. Stay tuned for more Ethereum-related news in 2024! Filecoin Roadmap – Looking Ahead to 2024
2024 is feeling more like spring and Filecoin is set for a huge growth trajectory! Here are four exciting breakthroughs Filecoin will achieve in 2024:
1. New high-value applications and computing L2 based on Filecoin
along withInterstellar Consensus (IPC)Entering the Filecoin mainnet in 2024, we will see the rise of Filecoin L2, especially applications that build on Filecoin’s massive storage, computing, and infrastructure advantages.
Expect to see the first Filecoin L2 computing network entering the mainnet (such as Fluence and Lilypad), the first Lambda network powered by Filecoin (Filecoin Station), the first search market (Filecoin Saturn), and more!
Especially with the proliferation of generative AI and specialized computing networks for AI inference and training, we expect to see more specialized computing networks leveraging Filecoin data storage as well as FVM and IPC to build blocks.
All of this L2 will flow more utility, storage usage, staking demand, and transaction volume back to the Filecoin mainnet.
IPC subnets are designed to be highly interoperable, so each new subnet will bring new features and superpowers to the entire Filecoin network, as well as build its own communities, tokens, and applications on Filecoin L1.
These L2s will also take advantage of new breakthrough features in FVM, such as leveraging custom WASM actors and new runtimes to power new high-quality games, computing systems, and more.
2. Filecoin as the basic storage layer of web3
In 2023, Filecoin data storage has experienced massive growth, totaling over 1.8 EiB from thousands of unique clients! In 2024, we will see Filecoin become an even more integral part of web3 - from being the storage layer for all blockchain state, to DePIN network infrastructure data, to smart contract data.
With the proliferation of rollup, DA layers, etc., the total amount of web3 chain states is growing explosively. By 2024, we expect to see more and more blockchains and DePIN networks follow in Solana’s footsteps and store their complete archive chain state in Filecoin, enabling cheaper, more verifiable long-term storage, and enabling Easier access to dapps, smart contracts and node operators.
The Filecoin virtual machine launched last year unlocked new programmable storage tools such as automated storage and repair contracts. By adding IPC and fast finality to unlock seamless bridging and cross-chain interoperability, we will see the new L2 data aggregation network come online to automate and scale Filecoin data loading, making it easier and faster for any web3 developer or project Store data on Filecoin.
With these building blocks, more paid data loading tools will emerge focusing on service aggregation, data availability services, and L1 blockchains with more efficient, decentralized, and on-chain native state storage.
Over the next cycle, the overall growth of chain state will drive more applications to choose low-cost, decentralized storage on Filecoin as their state archiving solution (currently Infura, Alchemy and some particularly centralized AWS dominate $791.52 billion market).
This will enable Filecoin to be more tightly integrated with many other blockchain ecosystems (such as Ethereum, Solana, Cosmos, etc.) so that any web3 developer can use Filecoin to retrieve historical data for analysis in each ecosystem , applications, etc.
The DePIN network will also leverage Filecoin to ensure that its critical infrastructure data about local weather conditions, city maps, or WiFi routers are well integrated with on-chain data and status.Tableland has partnered with WeatherXM, leading the way in this regard!
3. Filecoin is used to quickly retrieve hot data
More high-performance applications and paying storage customers will drive the need for fast, reliable retrieval of data stored in Filecoin. In 2023, Filecoin built tools (boost + IPNI + FilPlus reputation) and measurement systems (SPARK + Station) for large-scale search incentives. In 2024, we will see reliable retrieval become the standard for Filecoin storage clients, enhancing Filecoin’s utility and scope.
SPARK search monitoring systemLaunched in November 2023, it has been collecting decentralized metrics on Filecoin data retrieval at scale through the Station network. By 2024, we will see these retrieval metrics integrated into Filecoin + datacap approval and retrieval provider incentives via the new Filecoin Plus allocator, bringing retrieval incentives full circle. To date, SPARK has been completed over 660 million times.
Projects like Tableland, web3.storage, and Banyan have been building popular storage products on Filecoin, enabling use cases like s 3 to be deployed to the Filecoin network! These new layers allow Filecoin as an ecosystem to replace more parts of the infrastructure stack.
4. DeFi on Filecoin continues to grow
Filecoin is unique in that it incorporates core economic flows as part of its economy. In 2023, demand for Filecoin collateral through protocols such as (GLIF and StFIL) will increase significantly, and we expect that as builders begin to leverage FVM to pull more funds flow on the chain (such as payment for storage transactions, computing services, retrieval work, etc. ), new use cases will appear.
Summarize
Looking back in 2023, Filecoin has undergone a transformational journey, evolving from a decentralized storage network into a programmable open data service platform. During the year, events such as FILJakarta, FIL Dev Summit, and initiatives such as Filecoin Orbit and the TL;DR Platform played a key role in community engagement and saw significant community growth and technological advancement.
Looking ahead to 2024, Filecoin will further revolutionize the decentralized web with new applications and compute L2, and focus on becoming the fundamental storage layer for web3. Integrating with various blockchain ecosystems and enhancing data retrieval, Filecoin will continue its growth momentum and play a key role in shaping a more open and connected digital world.
