In this article, USV co-founder AVC discusses how Web3 and artificial intelligence are redefining data ownership and business models. Today, personal data is used by big tech companies, and Web3 is changing that landscape. This article will introduce Minting as the native business model of Web3 and its possible impact on the AI field. Let’s explore the potential of this new trend.

Weve all been served ads that made you look at them and think, How do they know Im in the market for that product? The answer is that the AI/ML models trained by big tech companies on our personal data are incredibly accurate and powerful.

There are two questions here:

  • The first is that the “data” they use to train their models actually belongs to us, but for two decades we’ve been giving it to big tech companies.

  • The second is that although these models were trained on our data, they belong to large tech companies.

It doesn’t have to be this way, and I’m sure it won’t last long.

Web3 will help, let me explain whats possible.

If you go to zora.co, you will find a social software that feels like Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook, etc. You can browse and choose to like what you see. But there is a difference. Like is called minting on Zora. You dont just tell the creator you like their work, you also give them a small sum of money and own a copy of the work.

The difference here is that you own one of the pieces you love and pay a little money for it. If a creator has thousands of people doing what you do (casting), which is not uncommon on Zora, they can make a pretty good income on their work.

Collectors, on the other hand, are building their own data sets. Data sets are stored on the blockchain and belong to them.

The obvious next step is that companies like Zora will provide collectors with the ability to train models on their collections. This turns their collection into a training data set. But the difference is that the collector owns the training data set. Rather than the training data set owned by Zora.

Soon we will have open source AI/ML models that can run on mobile phones. These will be our models and we can train them on our dataset.

Below is a screenshot of my Ethereum wallet connected to this blog. You can see some of the collection deals on this blog over the past week or two.

So whats going on here?

  • Writers get paid for their work

  • Readers build the datasets they own on-chain, not on Facebook

The next step is that we have our own open source models that we train on these collections that were building.

These open source models will help us write, find new content to read, and more. It can inspire us to start a new company, invest in a new company, listen to a new song, and do many other things we want to do.

Going back to the words of Chris Dixon (General Partner at A16Z) in yesterday’s post: In the long term, we still need to establish an economic contract between artificial intelligence systems and content providers. Artificial intelligence always needs new data to keep up with the times. The world is constantly evolving: tastes are changing, new genres are emerging, new things are being invented. There will be new themes to describe and represent. People who provide content for AI systems need to be compensated.

For writers, readers, collectors, creators, everyone, there is a way forward.

It starts with us owning our work and allowing others to collect our work for a fee.

What makes me optimistic about this is that this is not just talk and dreams. It happens right here on this blog. The tools we need to change the way the world works are already here, we just need to start using them.
