Be open minded in the mechanics of Web3.

This article is from Hong Kong Web3 Carnival Shorthand. The content of the speech is shared by the author and does not represent Wu’s point of view.

Victor Zhou,Ethereum Standards EIP Editorial Review.

Victor Zhou: Hello everyone! I'm Victor, thank you for the host, thank you all for listening to my speech, sorry I can't be there in person, I will give you a remote introduction from California.

Today I want to talk about open thinking. Let me introduce myself first. I am the editor of EIP. I am mainly active in ERC smart contracts and the application layer of Ethereum. I am an alumnus of Google, an alumnus of Johns Hopkins University and Microsoft alumni.

Many people ask me about the governance model of Ethereum, what is my answer?

Some people may say that it seems that the governance of Ethereum is actually very chaotic. This kind of governance is open and will bring us many benefits. Now I would like to ask the audience, how many of you have written smart contracts? How many people have written background services? I know there are a lot of developers here.

Usually I will ask my developer friends, how do you distinguish between these two design problems. One has API Write, and the other has API Save. If you choose, which one do you choose? The answer is that we don't care at all, because we don't mind anything other than consistency.

Consensus brings value, although to solve this problem, call an API, there may be built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, CDMA, HTTP, SSL, TCP, USB, TypeC, etc., these are standardized connections , let's connect to the car, to the headset.

Why is Hong Kong such a great seaport? There's a lot of container ships coming in and out, and that's something a lot of you around the ports can see. In the beginning, containers were used for train transportation, and later became a very important standard to allow ships to transport, so the construction of ships was designed to carry containers. Later, in the future, it was discovered that some people began to use containers to build houses, because containers are the standard and are very easy to integrate.

In Ethereum, the core part is the smart contract, and the smart contract is set up around the standard. How are these consensuses integrated?

ERC 20 is a transfer if it is shown in a code. With the consensus on simplification and openness, many great projects can be built based on ERC 20, and the market value has increased, which is great, and everyone can see the growth of the company. This is the power of open integration.

The following is an introduction to the four levels of openness, which is why Ethereum is so successful here. But before that, let me add that the very famous Richard Stallman talked about the principle of open source software. He said: If a software is truly free, it must have four different aspects of freedom, free to use, free to learn, free to share, and free to modify.

What are the four levels of openness? Cryptocurrency projects are in various stages of opening up. The most common and most visible at the beginning is openness, followed by control and contribution. Not only internal contributions can be made, but external contributions can also be made. Github contributors and open source contributors can also contribute to your project. People can also come in and join governance, as long as he is a stakeholder and as long as he is willing to contribute. Finally, more philosophical, welcome competition.

These four kinds of openness make Ethereum very successful.

Let me tell you about the basics of ERC 20 and ERC 21. It seems very detailed, but in fact it is very common. There are many differences between the outside and the inside. You will find that users and customers are outside. Builder creator programmer/ For internal employees, the boundaries are slowly disappearing. If users are allowed to come in to provide help, they can actually provide a lot of useful help. This is the contribution at the ABCDE level. It’s like a little baby can climb a ladder, safety first, start from the safest and lowest place, maybe you like and share the activity, you can tell people how good the project is and how much you like it.

The second level is to be attracted spiritually, and even donate money.

The third level is to start changing and commit to solving some things. There must be commitment and continuous improvement.

The fourth layer, building, building the software, participating in meetings, the earliest and the top layer is proactively starting something, so contributors are involved at every level.

Open governance is not the same as traditional governance. Traditionally, the structure of each company is top-down. You will see that the CEO and CCO are elected by the board of directors, and start assigning work and assembling teams. The other side is also a decentralized world, which is beginning to rely on more and more open governance. Before the cryptocurrency, it was very famous that there was the APACHE community, allowing users to be contributors, allowing code contributors to become project management committees, becoming core members of APACHE, and electing committees, so you can participate in governance as a contributor More and more trust, starting to have more decision-making power in the decision-making process, just like WIKIPEDIA, it is also a decentralized community, it exists between Ethereum, there is a lot of governance in it, there are many Open source contributors and WIKIPEDIA editors participate in governance.

The outside of Ethereum is relatively chaotic, with many stakeholders. The smallest is the Ethereum Foundation, which is often a student-style foundation, and remains neutral as a coordinator. I also saw that some people are developers and programmers. They develop things for customers, they can develop ERC, develop application layer protocols, and EVM operators. You may also be a part of it, you may be a group that holds Bitcoin, and the most important thing is the application on the chain when application users use Ethereum in the application.

Everyone has voted to change governance to some extent, which is why Ethereum can maintain open governance. Before PoS appeared and merged last year, the company that issued USDT USDC announced that they would support PoS. Vitalik said he was relieved. Because he is a little worried that the DeFi world will not follow PoS. But now as the founder of the project, you also worry that the DeFi project will not go in the same direction as you want, so everyone may vote with their feet. The opening of competition is the most difficult, allowing competitors to enter.

When it comes to competition, the core philosophy is that we are not necessarily the best, we can be wrong, we can compromise a bit, so one has to be prepared to improve, to be corrected, and even to be replaced by something else. For example, the security mechanism of Bitcoin can be attacked by 51%, but if 51% of the rights want to change the development direction of the Bitcoin chain, they can actually fork. Forks have also occurred in the past, and Ethereum is also accepted.

Wikipedia can also accept forked content, so copyright follow-up has a corresponding copyright policy. If you want to go in a different direction, we can support that.

From this point of view, we can be replaced, welcome competition, and also welcome competition from outside. You may realize that not just one, there may be 10 different Ethereum EVM execution nodes, there may be 5, 6 cell machines developed.

The leader of the Ethereum Foundation said that people should diversify their clients. Execution clients are too concerned about the gold version of Ethereum. Now there is a "call" to diversify clients. There is also the diversity of chains. Although Ethereum itself is a chain and the main chain, other chains are welcome and supported in the ecosystem. In the Ethereum ecosystem, no one is likely to be better than Ethereum, or replace Ethereum. If you want to launch your own EVM project, you only need to give a Chain ID.

Bringing developers together to share an implementation if you're interested, with the goal of being as easy to use as possible, relying on it to increase the internal innovation of smart contracts. It seems that I will explain to you the overall power of Ethereum, open contribution, and contribution to a certain project. I believe that the largest stakeholder of Ethereum is the user of the application. ERC facilitates open integration, lets people use applications, and helps projects grow. This is what I want to share with you, to keep you open.

Why is Ethereum so successful in governance? I hope that other projects can use it as a reference for learning.
