Castaway is a Free to Own mode Web3 game built in the browser by Dayton Mills after learning the lessons of Minecraft.

Dayton Mills ran a Minecraft server as a teenager and made hundreds of thousands of dollars. Today, almost his entire team is from the Minecraft community. Dayton Mills said in a tweet that the Free to Own mode has become especially important as Minecraft bans NFTs. With the Free to Own model, developers can reward their community with free NFTs that can also generate other game items or gear, a model that allows players to focus on enjoying the game.

Early versions of Castaway featured instant play (no downloads and registrations required), meaning people could jump right into the game with just one link. In the game you can drive a raft to move on the ocean, and pass through the raft! Collect branches, ropes and other materials to synthesize fishing rods, and then use fishing rods to catch other materials floating on the ocean. These materials have the opportunity to synthesize other equipment or bring you rewards. Plus, you can start voice and text chat with other players nearby.

On August 15th, Castaway launched its first NFT collection, The Raft, with a total of 100, using the Free to Mint model. So far, the floor price of The Raft has risen to 12.7 ETH. According to the official introduction, The Raft is the basis of Castaway's future games. It is a simple water boat made of wood and ropes. A Raft will be able to burn into a Genesis Island. Players owning Genesis Island means owning the resources on the island, and at the same time can sell all resources on the large exchange in the game and earn royalties. Before the release of Genesis Island, the official will take a snapshot of Raft holders and airdrop some tokens as gifts.

Castaway's development company is game startup Branch, which has raised $12.5 million in seed round financing on May 12 this year. The round of financing was led by Dragonfly and Polychain, with participation from TCG, Coinbase, DeFiance, Mechanism, 4RC, IVCrypto, Gabby Dizon from YGG, Jeff Zirlin from Axie Infinity, Ryan Wyatt from Polygon, and Jon Lai from a16z. And Gabriel Leydon, the founder of DigiDaigaku, invested in Branch as early as 2021 and interacted with multiple Castaway-related tweets.

The early version currently released by Castaway is only 1% of the entire project. The release of this version is to allow players to feel and experience the game in advance, so there is no need to connect the wallet to play the game.
