Greek Parliament passes crypto tax law: annual net gains over €500 taxed at 10% on the full amount, uncertainty remains over scope of swap taxation

Odaily reports: The Greek Parliament has passed a cryptocurrency tax law stipulating that, starting January 1, 2027, investors with annual net gains exceeding €500 will be taxed at 10% on the full amount of gains, while income from staking, crypto lending, and DeFi liquidity provision will be taxed separately at 15%.

The Parliament's Scientific Service warned that the bill's broad wording on "disposal for consideration" could bring crypto-to-crypto swaps within the taxable scope, and recommended explicitly exempting swaps and refining rules for stablecoin and e-money token transactions. The government had previously stated that swaps should not trigger capital gains tax.

Greek Ministry of Finance officials said implementation guidance on transaction transparency and tax audits will be issued in the coming weeks. The government has not yet estimated the tax revenue, with officials saying many Greek investors use overseas trading platforms, making the market size difficult to measure. (Decrypt)
