Brazilian exchange Mercado Bitcoin hit by over $46 million theft, related addresses still seeing fund transfers after deposits and withdrawals suspended
Odaily reports: Brazilian exchange Mercado Bitcoin stated that a security incident caused over $46 million in cryptocurrency to be transferred out of its wallets on Monday. Several hours after the company suspended deposits and withdrawals, funds were still being moved from addresses linked to the incident, and thousands of small ETH transfers were subsequently sent to the same address. Security firms said the attack was carried out through regular transfers rather than a smart contract exploit.
As of 16:42 UTC, stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle had frozen approximately $6.2 million in stolen funds; about $20 million was moved to newly created wallets, while another over $20 million remained in addresses identified by Mercado Bitcoin as related, including all 106 BTC. A Mercado Bitcoin spokesperson said customers suffered no losses and no data was leaked; the incident is still under investigation and has not yet been attributed to an organized group.
