Analysis: Anthropic IPO Could Ignite AI Stock Rebound as Tech Short Bets Surge

Odaily Report: Wall Street's recent risk-off sentiment toward equities may have set the stage for a strong market rebound. If Anthropic's planned IPO rekindles investor enthusiasm for artificial intelligence, tech stocks in particular could be poised for a rally. Data from Deutsche Bank shows that investors have reduced equity exposure to levels broadly in line with historical norms. Active investors' exposure to U.S. stocks has fallen to its lowest level in over a month, and funds employing computer-driven trading strategies have also trimmed positions. Once market confidence recovers, there is still room for a new wave of buying. Hedge funds have acted more aggressively, increasingly betting on falling stock prices.

Goldman Sachs Group said that this month, for every $1 of stocks its hedge fund clients bought, they shorted about $5 of stocks. The firm's records show that the scale of hedge funds borrowing funds to bet on falling stock prices is now near the highest level in five years. If stocks subsequently strengthen, these short bets could instead become a catalyst for gains, forcing those betting on declines to buy shares to close out their positions. (Bloomberg)
