Google makes major leadership changes in AI, as AI head steps down from key management role

Odaily Planet Daily News Google's parent company Alphabet has announced a major leadership reshuffle in its artificial intelligence division. AI chief Demis Hassabis is stepping down from his main management role, while several Gemini model leads, including senior engineer Jeff Dean, have also left successively. This personnel change comes at a critical moment for Google DeepMind: the flagship version of its latest Gemini model, originally scheduled for release in June, has yet to be launched, raising concerns among investors and the industry that Google is falling behind its competitors Anthropic and OpenAI, both of which have poached one of Google's star AI employees this summer.

Hassabis will take on the newly created role of Chief Scientist at Alphabet and will transition from CEO of Google DeepMind to Chairman. The business unit's Chief Technology Officer, Koray Kavukcuoglu, will take over day-to-day management. He will serve as Senior Vice President of the business unit while continuing to hold the position of Chief AI Architect at Alphabet. (Jin Shi)
