Mastercard Tests Identity Verification System for Stablecoin Cross-Border Payments

2026-08-05 13:01

Odaily News Payment giant Mastercard has partnered with stablecoin infrastructure network Borderless to launch a pilot project exploring the use of the Mastercard Crypto Credential standard framework to provide more reliable identity verification and compliance support for cross-border stablecoin payments.

Both parties stated that the pilot will test how standardized authentication mechanisms can provide participating parties with "trust signals" for approval, compliance review, and risk management, reducing compliance friction in cross-border stablecoin payments.

The Mastercard Crypto Credential framework provides identity confirmation and credibility assurance for blockchain transactions through unified standards and verification mechanisms. Borderless co-founder and CEO Kevin Lehtiniitty stated that compliance has always been a major obstacle to the scaled development of stablecoin payments, and Mastercard is attempting to apply the compliance trust model from traditional finance to digital asset payments.

He noted that Mastercard Crypto Credential will serve as the governance and verification layer in this pilot, but Mastercard will not directly process or settle funds.

This collaboration is Mastercard's latest move in its continued expansion into the stablecoin sector. Previously, Mastercard completed the acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure company BVNK for approximately $1.8 billion, further strengthening its infrastructure footprint in digital asset payments.

In June this year, Mastercard also announced plans to expand its settlement capabilities to support 24/7 card payment settlement via stablecoins, including USDC issued by Circle, PYUSD, USDG, and USDP issued by Paxos, as well as RLUSD issued by Ripple, among other stablecoins.

Market observers believe that as stablecoins gradually enter cross-border payment scenarios, identity authentication, compliance verification, and risk control infrastructure will become key components driving institutional adoption. (Cointelegraph)
