OpenAI: Multiple Adjustments Made to GPT-5.6 After Consultations with Trump Administration

2026-07-09 15:38

Odaily OpenAI CEO Altman stated that the company made multiple adjustments during consultations with the Trump administration before releasing its latest AI model to the public. Altman said that in the weeks leading up to GPT-5.6's full release, OpenAI engaged in collaborative, two-way communication with senior U.S. officials, including Commerce Secretary Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Bessent. Under pressure from the government to release the model in phases, the new model series will initially only be available to specific partners.

After OpenAI stated it had received approval from the U.S. government leadership, GPT-5.6 is scheduled to open to the public on Thursday. Altman did not detail the specific adjustments OpenAI made during this process, but said the government is testing the new model and looking for potential issues. "I think it's a good thing as long as the process is understandable, fair, and rapid. The government does seem to agree with these goals. I suspect the next model will go more smoothly. We understand the process better now and know how to respond." (Jinshi Data)
