Sovright Launches Argos Wallet Recovery Tool to Help Early Zcash Users Retrieve "Frozen" Funds
Odaily Planet Daily News: Sovright (the successor non-profit organization for Zcash R&D, formerly related to the Electric Coin Company) has officially released a wallet recovery tool called "Argos". It is designed to help early Zcash users recover funds that became "stuck" after the 2022 discontinuation of the old ZEC Wallet Lite.
Michelle Lai, Chair of the Executive Board at Sovright, stated that Argos can recover the affected assets as long as users still hold the old wallet's mnemonic phrase. However, since the issue involves specific shielded addresses, the exact scale of the impact cannot be precisely determined, though it is estimated to be a "significant amount", mainly concentrated among early long-term holders. She described the problem as a long-unresolved "technical pitfall" in the community—unobtrusive yet steadily eroding user trust.
Sovright currently consists of only three core members, all from the former Bootstrap system. The team is also testing a privacy-focused Zcash mining pool aimed at reducing hash rate centralization and improving network decentralization. The governance structure of the organization's predecessor underwent significant adjustments, with Electric Coin Company employees collectively leaving to establish a new entity, Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL). ZODL has received support from institutions such as Paradigm and a16z, focusing on the development of Zcash-related products.
Sovright emphasized that there is no antagonistic relationship with ZODL and stated that it will continue to focus on resolving "long-standing legacy issues" within the Zcash ecosystem, including key pain points such as wallet usability and infrastructure stability. (The Block)
