Danish Pension Fund Decides to Sell U.S. Bonds, Stating the U.S. Is No Longer a Good Credit Risk

2026-01-20 14:07

Odaily News The Danish pension fund "AkademikerPension" plans to sell all its holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds by the end of January, citing credit risks associated with Trump's policies. The fund's Chief Investment Officer, Anders Schelde, stated on Tuesday: "The U.S. overall has poor credit conditions, and in the long run, the U.S. government's fiscal situation is unsustainable." It is reported that the fund manages approximately $25 billion in savings for teachers and academics, with its holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds amounting to about $100 million as of the end of 2025. Schelde explained that risk management and liquidity management were the only reasons for maintaining the Treasury holdings, but "we decided we could look for other alternatives." Among the factors driving this decision, Schelde mentioned Trump's threatening remarks regarding Greenland. Additionally, concerns about fiscal discipline and a weak U.S. dollar also prompted the fund to reduce its exposure to U.S. assets. (Jin10)
