Indian court sentences 14 people to life in prison for cryptocurrency extortion case
8hours ago

According to Odaily Planet Daily, an Indian anti-corruption court has sentenced 14 people, including 11 police officials and a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member of the Legislative Assembly, to life imprisonment for the 2018 kidnapping of an Indian businessman and the extortion of cryptocurrency. The judge found the gang guilty of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping for ransom, illegal detention, and assault. Indian businessman Shailesh Bhatt reportedly received partial investment in Bitcoin after the collapse of his BitConnect company. Upon learning of his partial investment, the officials orchestrated a kidnapping plot to seize the cryptocurrency. Shailesh Bhatt was ultimately released only after agreeing to transfer some of the Bitcoin and $3.6 million in cash. (Deshgujarat)
