US special prosecutor drops election subversion case against Trump

Odaily News According to CNN, US special prosecutor Jack Smith said on Monday that he would drop the election subversion case against President-elect Trump and sought to dismiss the case in a court document filed with a judge. Trump has said that he would fire Smith once he takes office, breaking previous practice regarding special prosecutor investigations. "The position of the Department of Justice is that the case needs to be dismissed before the defendant is sworn in as required by the Constitution," Smith wrote in a six-page document. Smith's criminal pursuit of Trump over the past two years for charges of attempting to subvert the 2020 presidential election and his mishandling of confidential documents is a very unique chapter in American history: never before has a former White House occupant faced federal criminal charges.
