SK Hynix CEO: Memory chip shortage expected to last until 2030

2026-08-30 01:55

Odaily Planet Daily News: SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-Jung stated that the global memory chip shortage is expected to last until the end of 2030, with a low risk of oversupply, as memory chips are no longer "simply standardized commodities" in the AI era. Despite market concerns over an AI investment bubble, he said he sees "no" signs of oversupply risk or a potential memory downcycle, as demand from AI customers remains strong.

If "we pass the AI peak, or another downcycle emerges in the future, challenges could arise. But I believe the next downcycle will be different from the downturns we have experienced over the past few decades. Even if a downcycle comes, I expect it will not be a sharp decline, but rather a slow drop in demand, or possibly a plateau." (Jin Shi)
