Billionaire Dan Loeb Refutes AI Bubble Theory: AI Is Just Beginning, Massive Capital Expenditures Will Pay Off

2026-05-30 13:56

Billionaire investor and Third Point hedge fund founder Dan Loeb said in a podcast that current market concerns about an artificial intelligence (AI) "bubble" are seriously exaggerated, and the development phase of the AI industry is completely different from the dot-com bubble era.

Loeb noted that tech giants including Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta have combined capital expenditures exceeding $700 billion this year, potentially reaching $1 trillion next year, with the vast majority allocated to AI infrastructure development. He stated that if one doesn't believe these capital expenditures will generate returns, it's equivalent to believing companies are "burning cash for nothing," but these companies currently have strong profitability, ample cash flow, and can support investments through their own balance sheets.

Loeb emphasized that this situation differs from the "valuations detached from fundamentals" seen during the dot-com bubble and does not constitute a traditional valuation bubble. He also mentioned that AI companies like Anthropic are experiencing rapid revenue growth and accelerating product adoption, indicating the industry is still in an early expansion phase.

According to reports, Anthropic's latest financing valuation has approached $965 billion, with annualized revenue jumping from $14 billion to $47 billion, further strengthening market confidence in the commercial potential of AI.

However, some investors including Michael Burry still express concerns about overheated AI valuations, believing that massive investments may struggle to generate corresponding returns. Loeb said, "We haven't even scratched the surface of AI development yet," and believes the current stage is still in the early phase of long-term growth. (BusinessInsider)
