Iran is close to reaching an agreement with Oman on managing the strait

Odaily Planet Daily News Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi said on August 8 that Iran is currently negotiating with Oman on the legal mechanism, management methods, and determining shipping routes for vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, and the two sides are very close to reaching an agreement. However, whether the Strait of Hormuz can be reopened also depends on other conditions, including the United States making amends for its violations of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding.

Araghchi said that in the past, there was a traffic separation scheme in the Strait of Hormuz, but Iran believes that the original route is no longer suitable as a shipping route, and Iran cannot accept continued use of that route. Therefore, it is necessary to plan a new navigation mechanism, although this involves complex technical and legal issues. What the two sides are currently discussing is a temporary navigation route. Before the new official navigation route is finalized, a temporary shipping lane will first be established, which will serve as the basis for the future official route. On this issue, the military departments of Iran and Oman have already begun consultations based on existing nautical charts. Once the relevant negotiations are completed and final conclusions are reached, the new navigation route will be determined. (Jin Shi)
