Chainalysis plans to introduce an on-chain tracking standard system, proposing an "Address Clustering Ontology" to unify blockchain forensic methods

2026-06-29 15:09

Odaily Planet Daily News: Blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis has released a new methodology proposal, attempting to establish a standardized framework for on-chain fund tracking for law enforcement agencies and investigators, used to identify address clusters and determine their potential control relationships.

The proposal defines the on-chain analysis structure in the form of an "ontology," with the core being the systematic decomposition of the currently non-standardized industry concept of "clusters" into wallet segments and functional roles. It describes on-chain relationships through a two-layer structure: the first layer defines the transaction graph structure, and the second layer evaluates the inference confidence level.

Chainalysis stated that the framework aims to enhance the interpretability and legal applicability of on-chain forensic methods and was designed and validated based on its practical experience in cases related to the U.S. Department of Justice, including its analysis in the Bitcoin Fog mixing service case. The company's Chief Scientist, Jacob Illum, pointed out that the proposal's goal is to answer the question, "On what basis of evidence can these addresses be considered to belong to the same entity?" but emphasized that on-chain analysis itself cannot directly identify the identity of end users and must still be combined with legal investigative means targeting centralized entities like exchanges.

Chainalysis stated that the standard proposal is currently open for industry discussion, hoping to promote the formation of a more unified technical specification for on-chain analysis methods in the fields of law enforcement and compliance. (CoinDesk)
