OpenAI will strengthen the traceability and verification system for AI-generated content, supporting the EU AI transparency guidelines
Odaily Planet Daily News OpenAI announced its support for the European Commission's "Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content," aiming to promote the development of a trustworthy AI ecosystem and strengthen the source tracking and transparency of AI-generated content.
OpenAI stated that the guidelines are an important step in implementing the European Union's "EU AI Act." This support is built upon OpenAI's years of research, product development, and ecosystem collaboration around content provenance.
According to reports, since 2024, OpenAI has begun adding C2PA metadata to the DALL·E 3 image generation tool to identify the source of AI-generated content. Subsequently, OpenAI has continuously improved content labeling and detection technologies and launched public verification tools to help users determine whether an image contains source signals related to OpenAI-generated content. OpenAI stated that it currently adopts a multi-layered content provenance approach, including:
Adding C2PA Content Credentials to images generated by ChatGPT, Codex, and the API;
Combining C2PA metadata with SynthID watermarking in AI-generated images to improve source identification;
Launching a public verification tool to help users detect if supported images contain OpenAI's generation source signals;
Participating in the establishment of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) standards to promote unified industry content provenance specifications.
OpenAI pointed out that AI content provenance technology is still in the development stage. Metadata may be lost due to operations such as uploading, downloading, format conversion, or screenshots, and watermarks may also be affected. Therefore, the entire industry needs to jointly promote more reliable and interoperable verification mechanisms.
OpenAI stated that it will continue to strengthen content transparency in its products, participate in the development of open standards, and cooperate with the EU AI Office, member states, and the global AI community to promote the establishment of a safer, more transparent, and trustworthy AI ecosystem.
