Odaily Planet Daily News Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the Strait of Hormuz is not an international waterway, but is jointly owned by Iran and Oman, and is thousands of miles away from the U.S. coast. The maritime boundaries are very clear.
The narrowest point of the Strait of Hormuz is only 21 nautical miles, approximately 39 kilometers, and the entire strait falls within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman. Iran believes that, from a legal perspective, this gives Iran and Oman the right to regulate passage through the strait.
