Primitive Ventures joint venture Dovey Wan: The back of Web2 is not Web3

This is probably the most repeated sentence I have said this year. Maybe I'm wrong. After all, it's hard to imagine what Web3 looks like. No one could imagine the current mobile Internet before the iPhone. It is good to record some scattered logic here, for future falsification or verification.
A lot of Web3 logic has been repeatedly emphasizing the problems of Web2, data islands, privacy security, giant monopoly, and so on. In the bull market cycle in 2017, there were also a large number of projects that are now properly placed on Web3, and there were also short-lived brilliance (market value) from DID to Data Marketplace to Social to de-Ads.
After all, the highlight of the ICO back then was the ICO of $BAT, and it was the first time that gas war was used.
$BAT is a full-stack product, from the dream level team, to the traffic portal (browser), to the design of the entire decentralized advertising distribution and creator economy, it seems that it is not out of date at all. I still remember the excitement when I saw BAT, Attention is currency, and whoever prints it should be rewarded.
Almost all Web3 mappings of Web2 traffic types follow this big logic.
The Brave browser is sitting on over 50 million MAUs, but the usage of $BAT (circulation within the ad economy) and payout on the client side pales in comparison.
Brave is a very good entry, including various cooperation with other projects on Web3. However, the economic transformation of its own Web2 utility to Web3 is full of difficulties. Brave's current main income method is still traditional advertising.
Nowadays, there are a large number of so-called "web3" projects, various fi, and various verbs to earn. The path is still the path of 2017: coin distribution, customer acquisition, decentralization, community autonomy, and reaching the peak of Web3. It seems that if there is currency, there will be users, and if there is decentralization, it will be able to grow spontaneously and recycle itself. As long as Web2 is criticized and users are unhappy, Web3 can be achieved.
Or another common path is:
First use the web2 mature customer acquisition system to acquire purchases, retain them, create a small million-level application, issue coins, and become the largest DAU application in the crypto field, announcing the completion of the web3 revolution. This script was also staged repeatedly in 2017, and the ending is now clear at a glance.
It's good to try, but the postures are a bit forced.
What the fuel engine changes is the principle of energy production and consumption. Putting a hardtop convertible on a horse-drawn carriage cannot turn a horse-drawn carriage into a car."Maybe Web3 will eventually solve the evils of Web2 in its own way, but simply do a de-twitter, de-uber, de this de that, do "bright side of the web
There is a high probability that it is not the evolution path of Web3.
TikTok has become a giant under the eyes of Facebook and Tencent. This must be far beyond the imagination of Zuck and Allen. This is just an internal struggle of Web2.
Real Web3 applications will most likely emerge from relatively marginal usage scenarios, and will not cut straight to the heart of the enemy as soon as they come up. Go back and look at the earliest forms of today's giants, random and funny.
It wasn't de-Google that beat Google, and it wasn't de-facebook that beat Facebook. Not to mention that the underlying technology, tools and architecture are far from keeping up with the beautiful vision of "data economy" and "community autonomy". How to deduce these giants?
If you are a builder of Web3, please don't be constrained by the inherent paths of various DAU, duration, conversion rate, etc. in Web2. None of that matters.
We don’t need to make a headline with coins, a twitter with coins, what we need is something that only 100 people like it at the beginning, 1000 people think it’s funny, 10000 people think it’s something crazy but it seems interesting , is enough.
If token distribution is just a "customer acquisition channel" and a "means of growth" in your product system, or if this product can be operated more efficiently in the inherent way of the Internet without the token economy, then congratulations, you are a qualified Web2 application developer.Innovation often comes from marginal groups and marginal scenarios,
The back of Web2 is not Web3.
