Data: Crypto Industry Lost $1.18 Billion to Attacks in Q3, with About 77% Related to Issues Such as Insufficient Audit Coverage

Odaily reports that a report from blockchain security firm Hacken shows that in Q3 2026, there were 107 security incidents in the crypto industry, with losses amounting to $1.18 billion, up 55% quarter-over-quarter. Of this, approximately $906.8 million in losses involved compromised vendors or development tools, known vulnerabilities that were not patched in a timely manner, and related components not being included in the latest audit scope.

Hacken co-founder Andrii Matiukhin pointed out that project teams often only audit critical smart contracts, while wallets, signing systems, and third-party software may not be covered, leading investors to mistakenly believe that the project is secure as a whole. The report states that the largest loss event in Q3 was the attack on Bitget, with losses of at least $352 million, in which attackers exploited a vulnerability in a third-party security product to gain access to withdrawal infrastructure.

Hacken also found that the asset security of some derivatives trading platforms and prediction markets relies on inadequate key management arrangements, but no vulnerabilities currently being exploited have been found in the relevant platforms. The company emphasized that security audits cannot replace continuous vulnerability management, and project teams still need to promptly fix known vulnerabilities and ensure that audits cover the system components that actually affect the safety of funds. BIS Working Paper: Rising Bank Deposit Rates Slow Stablecoin Growth

Odaily: A working paper from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), based on weekly U.S. data from January 2019 to June 2025, found that when bank deposit rates rise, the growth rate of the stablecoin market slows. The paper's authors include BIS economist Iñaki Aldasoro and Rashad Ahmed of the Andersen Institute for Finance and Economics.

In the sample, stablecoin market capitalization grew by about 15% over a typical 10-week period. Baseline estimates show that after a one-basis-point increase in deposit rates, that growth rate falls to about 12%; an alternative method used to identify causality shows the growth rate falling to about 6%, though the stablecoin market still continued to grow.

The correlation is stronger for Circle-issued USDC than for Tether-issued USDT, which the authors attribute to USDC's closer ties to U.S. users. The paper notes that banks can influence the pace of stablecoin adoption through deposit pricing, and recommends that regulators assess whether stablecoin issuers should be allowed to pay yield to holders and whether issuers should be required to hold a portion of their reserves in bank deposits.

The working paper represents only the views of the authors and does not necessarily reflect the position of the BIS; the sample covers a single high-interest-rate cycle, during which stablecoins paid no interest to holders. The U.S. Treasury, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) are drafting implementation rules for the GENIUS Act, which takes effect next January and sets out rules for the issuance, use, and custody of stablecoins. Can Bitcoin Return to $100,000 by Year-End? Market Views Diverge

Odaily reports that market analysts are divided on whether Bitcoin can return to $100,000 before the end of 2026.

Ryan Rasmussen, Head of Research at crypto asset management firm Bitwise, believes that factors such as institutional demand through ETFs and corporate Bitcoin purchases, concerns over inflation and government debt, and an improving regulatory environment are expected to push Bitcoin to higher levels by year-end, potentially even breaking through $100,000.

Adam Morgan McCarthy, Head of Research at London-based crypto trading and market data firm LO:TECH, expects Bitcoin to trade mainly in the $85,000 to $95,000 range through year-end. He noted that inflation pressures and the possibility of further rate hikes by the Federal Reserve will continue to weigh on Bitcoin's performance. U.S. consumer prices rose 0.6% month-over-month in September, with core CPI up 0.3% month-over-month, complicating the outlook for monetary policy.

Luca Invernizzi, Senior Derivatives Trader at Nomura's crypto unit Laser Digital, said Bitcoin will remain primarily driven by macroeconomic factors and U.S. long-term Treasury yields in the near term. However, market leverage has been largely flushed out, and if Bitcoin effectively breaks above $90,000, it could trigger a new round of short-covering. James Butterfill, Head of Research at CoinShares, also believes that the contradiction between inflation and a weakening job market will influence the Fed's subsequent policy decisions and Bitcoin's trajectory. Russian Central Bank: Ban on Crypto Transactions via Self-Custodial Wallets for Residents to Take Effect in July 2027

Odaily reports: The Russian Central Bank has stated that starting July 1, 2027, Russian residents will be prohibited from using self-custodial wallets for crypto asset transactions, or from transferring funds from regulated brokers to self-custodial wallets. Such transactions may only be carried out through licensed brokers or exchanges.

Currently, 13 institutions in Russia are authorized to provide digital currency trading services, including VTB Bank and Sberbank. The Central Bank has also prohibited transfers between licensed exchange accounts held by different individuals—even if both accounts are held by the same person—and has barred withdrawals from exchange accounts to self-custodial wallets.

Russian Deputy Finance Minister Ivan Chebeskov estimates that approximately 20 million Russians hold crypto assets worth 3.7 trillion rubles, or nearly $44 billion. Anatoly Popov, Deputy Chairman of Sberbank, expects that only about 20% of Russia's crypto trading volume will migrate to licensed exchanges. (Bitcoin.com News)

Binance and Coinbase Participate in West African Anti-Fraud Operation, Helping Identify Over $11 Million in Funds Pending Freeze

Odaily report: According to a U.S. Department of Justice announcement, law enforcement authorities in Ghana and Nigeria arrested 28 people in a joint operation targeting West African fraud networks, involving criminal activities such as cryptocurrency investment fraud. The operation was led by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA), with participation from Binance, Coinbase, and blockchain analytics firms Chainalysis, Elliptic, and TRM Labs. Private-sector partners collectively identified more than $11 million in funds that could potentially be frozen, though the amount has not yet been confirmed as recovered assets.

Coinbase stated that it assisted in tracking illicit funds, supporting asset freezes, and providing intelligence to investigators, identifying more than 65 victims still being defrauded and helping prevent over $415,000 in potential losses. During the operation, Ghanaian police arrested 19 people and seized 303 electronic devices, while another 9 people were arrested in Nigeria. Additionally, 117 human trafficking victims in Ghana are awaiting repatriation to Nigeria, and participants also provided law enforcement with leads on more than 30 suspected fraud centers. The U.S. Department of Justice said this was the first joint operation of its kind specifically targeting the West African region. (CoinDesk)

Cysic Cross-Chain Bridge Paused After Unauthorized Minting of 10 Million CYS Tokens

Odaily reports: The crypto project Cysic has announced that its cross-chain bridge was paused on Saturday after an attacker exploited a processing flaw to mint 10 million CYS tokens without authorization on BNB Smart Chain. Preliminary investigations indicate that the attacker may have gained unauthorized access to the database supporting the bridge.

The unauthorized minting occurred at 12:31:38 UTC, and Cysic blacklisted the receiving address in the token contract at 13:47:52. The address currently still holds approximately 2.8 million CYS, and related transfers have been restricted.

Cysic stated that the incident only involved cross-chain bridge message processing and token minting, and did not affect the mainnet or other operating systems, nor did it result in the theft or unauthorized transfer of existing CYS or other assets in user wallets. Token transfers, swaps, and actual losses are still under review, and the company has engaged security firms and plans to release a follow-up report. (Cointelegraph)
