US-Iran talks see new progress: Iran reviewing specific nuclear proposals
Odaily reports — According to The New York Times, citing five people familiar with the matter, Iran is reviewing a series of specific nuclear proposals put forward by mediators, indicating progress in Qatar-led US-Iran diplomatic mediation. Over the past week, Qatar held two rounds of talks in Tehran, hosted a third round in Doha, and engaged with Iranian officials in Armenia.
US Vice President Vance has also been actively pushing the negotiations, with both sides reviewing the latest proposals in an attempt to bridge differences. Rezaei, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, publicly stated that Iran will not negotiate on the nuclear issue until the US meets Iran's conditions, but people familiar with the matter say he has privately shown greater openness to discussing the nuclear issue. Iran's main demands include unfreezing assets, lifting oil sanctions, and ending the US maritime blockade of Iranian ports. The main disagreement on the nuclear issue concerns the disposition of highly enriched uranium stockpiles: Trump demands that Iran hand over its stockpile, while Iran refuses to ship enriched uranium out of the country, and has previously discussed diluting it domestically under international inspectors' supervision.
Meanwhile, US and Israeli militaries have drawn up target lists for strikes on Iran, including energy and key economic facilities. Iran has warned that it will expand the scope of retaliation if attacked again, and senior Iranian officials are simultaneously discussing withdrawal from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Gulf states fear that a renewed conflict could affect their own economies, and UAE Presidential Diplomatic Advisor Gargash has called for resolving the crisis through diplomatic channels.
