Ethereum Foundation researcher proposes moving post-quantum transition target up to 2028, one year earlier than originally planned

Odaily – Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake stated at the Devcon 8 conference in Mumbai that he hopes to complete Ethereum's post-quantum and post-AI transition by December 2028, one year earlier than the Foundation's previously set quantum-resistance target of December 2029. This means developers will need to complete three additional network upgrades within the next 24 months.

Previously, the Ethereum Foundation's roadmap published in September set December 2029 as the target date for achieving quantum resistance at the execution layer, consensus layer, and data layer. Drake's proposed timeline is more aggressive but has not yet formally replaced the existing roadmap, and the related plans are expected to be reassessed in January 2027.

Drake previously also proposed plans to launch production-ready leanVM technology in 2027 and to deploy post-quantum solutions across all three Ethereum layers in 2028.
