Apollo Guidance Computer requires 10.3 seconds for a single Bitcoin hash, would need 13 million times the age of the universe to mine a block at current hashrate

Odaily reports: The Apollo Guidance Computer was programmed in 2019 to run the Bitcoin mining algorithm, requiring 10.3 seconds to complete a single double SHA-256 hash. The device was used for navigation and engine control during the Apollo missions and had approximately 4KB of memory.

Computer scientist Ken Shirriff's team verified the program's results using block 286,819, which had already been mined, but did not earn any Bitcoin. At the time, the Bitcoin network hashrate was approximately 65 EH/s, and the device would have needed on average about a million times the age of the universe to find a block.

After the difficulty adjustment on September 5, the Bitcoin network hashrate stands at 934 EH/s, with mining difficulty rising to 127.45 trillion, roughly 14 times higher than in 2019. By this calculation, the device would need on average approximately 13 million times the age of the universe to find a single block. (Bitcoin.com News)
